Summary/Abstract: This paper is an attempt to circumscribe the role and purpose of philosophy as can be deduced by approaching Marcus Aurelius’ diary from a hermeneutic viewpoint grounded in a framework shaped by maieutics as method to gain knowledge and to mould oneself as an authentic human being. We consider that highlighting the meanings that reside in the relation and distinction (recognizable as a possible guiding thread of the whole approach of this dialogue) between philosophy and wisdom and, consequently, highlighting the ascending meaning and purpose of philosophy may also sketch a hermeneutic frame that enable us to set forth the deep agreement between theory and practice in the case of Marcus Aurelius (his inherited stoicism and his way of leading his own life and fulfilling his role as ruler of the empire).
