Summary/Abstract: The sketch is an attempt to reflect on Fyodor Dostoevsky’s „Polish problem,” a a largely polemical attempt at the previous interpretations of Polish dostoevskyology. Polish critics looked for the expression of the writer’s reluctance, even polonophobia, in the negative portrayals of Poles, who, apart from Notes from the Dead House, do not play any significant role in the novels. Researchers and critics indicated this on the metaphysical, national, religious and ethical levels. An analysis of Dostoyevsky’s works, in which Polish characters appear, proves that the creations of Poles primarily reflect the negative Russian stereotype of a Pole. Only Poles, who sought independence from Russia, aroused the fundamental reluctance and irritation of Dostoyevsky. The writer showed them as arrogant frauds and false counts.
