Summary/Abstract: The article refers to that ample action of reviewing the psalm music of the early XIX century which, in the historiography of the field, is known as the “Chrysantine reform”. The author invokes the premises of the launching of the reform, the contribution of the musicians who promoted it, its guiding lines and the expected effects. The evaluation from the historical perspective of the phenomenon is also taken into consideration. The services and disservices, which influenced the continuity of Byzantine tradition, the choir singing and the musical-ecclesiastical training, have been analyzed. In the Romanian lands, the reform is nurtured by Peter the Ephesus, a church singer formed in the very “epicenter” of the modern endeavor at the School of psaltic music in Constantinople, led by Hrisant Proto-psalter Archimandrite, Gregory Levitul Lampadarie and Hurmuz Hartofilax. The control on introducing the “new system” into the liturgical chant of the Romanians is taken over by Macarie Ieromonahul and Anton Pann, disciples of Peter Ephesus. In the context of the Romanian psalm music, the reform coalesced with the process of romanizing the cultic music, stimulated and strengthened it.
