Summary/Abstract: In her historical study Gracia Mendes' Long Journey, Marianna D. Birnbaum has told the story of the life of a woman with a strong personality, "who has succeeded to overcome every barrier imaginable, that the society of the time imposed on her, and to successfully face every challenge and every restriction imposed by her sex and her creed". Birnbaum reconstructs the diverse and changing world of the late Middle Ages (that is, early Modern Age), and writes out the life of Señora Gracia Mendes (Luna), Jewish, wealthy widow of Portuguese origin, who has in the 16th century maintained for decades one of the most powerful positions in European trade. Writing out Gracia's personal history and her family's history, Birnbaum also writes out the history of Jewish communities in Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, Italy, Dubrovnik and the Ottoman Empire. She told her long-lasting and fascinating journey in a study which will be an impetus for discovering many stories of the invisible history of the Others.
