Summary/Abstract: The aim of this essay is to expose the distinctive features of Maria Janion’s scholarly work in the context of her research into the history of Polish and European Romanticism, especially her interpretation of European romantic identity and the instances of its negation or continuation. It is Janion’s idiosyncrasies as well as self-corrections of her views and writings that highlight her scholarly far-sightedness and prominence. One of the most important elements this essay focus-es on is the neglected motif of romantic kitsch. Janion persuasively insisted on its presence in the research on Romanticism during the symposium: Styles of Romantic Behaviour (December 6–7, 1982), where she discussed the concept with Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz.
