Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the role of scientific research institutes in society, starting from the belief that science is one of the most important factors of progress. The paper addresses the situation in Romania, touching upon issues such as: the establishment and financing of research institutes by Romanian scientists Grigore Antipa and Emil Racoviță in the first half of the 20th century; the work of research institutes over time and the role of scientists (be they sociologists, economists, chemists, physicists, naturalists etc.) in the theoretical and practical study and documentation of a multitude of aspects (not only of purely economic and financial matters, but also of the country’s natural resources) that impact upon the prosperity of the Romanian state and the harmonious development of the country’s population; the need for a better funding of research institutes (for the endowment of laboratories, with state-of the-art equipments, for the continuous specialisation of human resources etc.).
