Summary/Abstract: The last parliamentary elections in Turkey took place on 22 July 2007. Just as those of November 2002, they were won by a conservative formation with Islamic roots—the Justice and Development Party (Adalet ve Kalkýnma Partisi—AKP). This party obtained 46.5% of the votes (341 seats), whereas the next two parties that succeeded in crossing the 10% electoral threshold—the Republican People’s Party (Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi—CHP), on whose lists the Democratic Left Party (Demokratik Sol Parti—DSP) also ran, and the National Movement Party (Milliyetçi Hareket Partisi—MHP)—obtained 20.9% (112 seats) and 14.3% (70 seats) of the votes respectively. A total of 26 seats were won by independent candidates, with 20 of them then forming the parliamentary caucus of the pro-Kurdish Democratic Society Party (Demokratik Toplum Partisi—DTP). This outcome allowed the AKP to govern single-handedly for a second term.
