Summary/Abstract: On 30 March 1986, following his blessing urbi et orbi on St. Peter Square, Pope John Paul II exchanged greetings with Jerzy Kuberski, the head of the Group for Permanent Working Contacts between the Holy See and the Government of the People’s Republic of Poland (PRP). As this took place in the presence of George P. Schultz, the U.S. secretary of state in the Reagan administration, former Italian Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti, a regular guest before St. Peter’s Basilica, and television cameras, it was seen as an important gesture reflecting the Pope’s openness.
