Protest actions of the women's strike in terms of the theory of new social movements

Summary/Abstract: In this article, we analyze the protests that took place in Poland after the Constitutional Court handed down its sentence (October 22, 2020) that strengthened the current abortion law. Using sociological categories concerning new social movements and collective actions, we try to explain what was happening on the streets of Polish cities at the turn of autumn and winter 2020. Based on our own activist experiences in Toruń and analysis of existing data, we describe the nature of protest actions, explain their wide scale, and confront the controversies and questions that surrounded the actions of the Women’s Strike and co-protesters.
