Summary/Abstract: Contemporary technologies enabled the formation of information literacy as a new form of communication. At the same time, the internet became a mass media, which made the competences in this field crucial in the process of lifelong learning. The UNESCO Programmes speak about the importance of the information literacy, emphasizing the key role of the equal access to informations and the knowledge that is the foundation for the development of the society of knowledge (Croatian librarian society, 2011.). The environments in which the information and digital literacy is being used and developed differ on account of various sociological, economic and technological conditions. The State holds an important role in the development and usage of the new technologies. The aim of this paper is to point out the role of the information and digital literacy in the process of lifelong learning. Through an overview of the exsisting reasearch and the examples from every day practise, the aim is to depict how the persons in older and mature age adapt to the changes that the modern times bring.
