Summary/Abstract: The paper presents results of a survey on nutritional awareness and food nutritional labelling preferences conducted among commodity science students from three polish universities – the University of Economics in Cracow, the University of Economics in Poznan and the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn. Commodity science students were chosen because they were assumed to have knowledge about food products and labelling. They are also a group of people that in the future could be responsible for creating and verifying food and nutrition guidelines. The article also analyses the two most popular nutritional labelling systems in Europe – GDA and Traffic-light food labelling, which the students polled decided should be combined into one. They further believe nutritional labelling should be mandatory, and appear on the front of food product packaging. The questionnaire also revealed that despite their declarations of full or partial understanding of nutritional labeling systems, students couldn’t correctly interpret information provided by the GDA system. What is more, almost two thirds of them could not give the correct name of any food nutrition labeling system.
