Eduard Berend and the Origins of German Literary Onomastics

Summary/Abstract: In 1942, the editor of the works of the German poet Jean Paul (Richter), Eduard Berend, published from his Swiss exile an article on Jean Paul’s poetical naming practices. This article can be considered as the founding text of scientific literary onomastics. Berend not only shows how Jean Paul found his names, but gives a detailed analysis of his naming practice. Thus, partly explicitly, partly implicitly, Berend devises a methodology of future scientific literary onomastics.
