Summary/Abstract: The theme of this article is a section of the Qur’anic ayah 4:34, wherein the wa-ḍribūhunna is given. We here discuss, on the bases of some European and Western translations of the Qur’an, different approaches to the translation and interpretation of the term wa-ḍribūhunna. Does it mean “beat them”, “strike them”, “hit them”, ” strike them, lightly”, “punish them”, “chastise them”, or does it mean: “teach them”, “give them nice examples” and so on? This article also presents some often used quotations from classical commentaries of the Qur’an of this ayah 4:34, particularly of the expression wa-ḍribūhunna.
