Summary/Abstract: The present article approaches Joshua Cohen and Thomas Nagel’s evidence that “those who studied John Rawls’ work and, moreover, those who knew him personally are deeply aware of his deeply religious temperament, which influenced his life and work”, his political philosophy being nothing more than an instrument of defence of reasonable faith, and especially reasonable faith in the service of just constitutional democracy. The mentioned hypothesis will be never abandoned, but fulfilled by Rawls in/through A Theory of Justice, by generalizing the principle of religious tolerance and considering justice as one of the existing institutions capable of ensuring a political legitimacy guaranteed despite religious conflicts. The article will highlight Rawls's attitude toward religion and its development over time, topics of major interest, both personal and professional, for understanding his thinking, appealing to two Rawlsian dedicated texts – A brief inquiry into the meaning of sin and faith and “On my religion” – and to John Rawls–Jürgen Habermas context of a deeply religious debate.
