Summary/Abstract: This paper aims at illustrating changes occurring in the onomasticon of Maramureș in the last century and the factors leading to the appearance of new first names. Between the years 1922–1936, mail questionnaires were distributed for the Surveys of the Museum of the Romanian Language. Survey IV, Place names and personal names, comprises 34 questions referring to anthroponymy. In historical Maramureș, the questionnaire was administered in three settlements: Borșa (a town), Budești (a village), and Vad, nowadays Vadul Izei (a village in the bordering area of the town of Sighetu Marmației). The investigation follows three aspects: the dynamic of family names, the innovation of the stock of first names, and the preservation of certain bynames. Diachronic and synchronic analyses of anthroponymy highlight not only the dynamic of personal names, but also the relationship between anthroponymy and socio- and psycholinguistic factors: migration, the influence of the mass media, the desire to break away from tradition, and the conservation of traditional aspects among others.
