Summary/Abstract: The student societies in Chernovtsy, “Arboroasa” and “Junimea”, were the most important associations for the national emancipation movement in Bukovina. “Arboroasa” operated between 1875–1877 and attracted many participants in its cultural activities. “Junimea” was the successor of “Arboroasa” and functioned until 1938. Almost all the members of “Arboroasa” joined “Junimea”, and the initial leadership of “Junimea” included Dimitrie Onciul as president and Ciprian Porumbescu as secretary. “Arboroasa” and “Junimea” elected leaders annually from among the students at the University of Chernovtsy. The “Junimea” society took over the status, the festive anthem and the motto of “Arboroasa”. The “Junimea” society had several full members and honorary members, from Bukovina, the Old Kingdom of Romania and Transylvania. Among them were great personalities such as Queen Elisabeth of Romania, Vasile Alecsandri, Titu Maiorescu, Barbu Ştefănescu-Delavrancea, Simion Mehedinți, Nicolae Iorga, Sextil Pușcariu, Gheorghe Pop de Băsești, Alexandru Vaida Voevod, Simion Florea Marian, Mihail Sadoveanu and others. The activity of “Junimea” was interrupted after the outbreak of the First World War. Then, a real persecution began against those who campaigned for Romanian interests.
