Origin and Development of the Historical Predecessors of the Modern Bassoon – Dulcian and Baroque Bassoon

Summary/Abstract: This publication aims to research the origin, and follow the development of the early predecessors of the modern bassoon in historical terms. Various documented depictions by various musicologists over the 17th and18th century have been considered, as well as the most recent research on the subject. The publication provides an analysis of the documented development of the historical bassoon, and discusses the repertoire for the dulcian, the baroque bassoon, and these instruments’ application – from the first information about the dulcian, to the development of the four-part Baroque bassoon, in France and the Netherlands.
