Summary/Abstract: Frequency analysis of parts of speech in the first corpus of spoken Czech — the Prague Spoken Corpus (PSC) — reveal that every seventh word in common speech is a particle. Such a high frequency obliges linguists to describe and define their function and use more accurately. Teachers should also consider their approach to teaching particles to non-native learners of Czech. After a brief presentation of the major results from the study of particles occurring in PSC, the article analyzes the way the textbook Basic Czech uses and teaches particles. Particles are an integral part of common speech; using them correctly and appropriately helps foreign Czech language-learners sound authentic and natural. This tends to take quite a bit of time to learn, however. The article focuses on opportunities to present particles in Czech courses for foreigners and on appropriate exercises to master them.
