Summary/Abstract: Już od czasów Maxa Webera w refleksji naukowej i filozoficznej pojawiała się myśl, że reformacja to nie tylko zjawisko historyczne, ale nade wszystko społeczno-kulturowe. Kojarzą się z nią m.in.: indywidualizm, doświadczeniowość, nowoczesność, innowacja, aktywizm, asceza w świecie, kreatywność, samorefleksja, komunitarianizm, oszczędność, rozwój rachunkowości, krytycyzm, kapitalizm, kultura pisma i druku, odczarowanie, sekularyzacja. To jedynie kilka przykładów zjawisk i wartości wiążących się nierozłącznie z szeroko rozumianą reformacją w kulturze. Samo istnienie reformacji owocuje historycznie pojęciem tolerancji i szacunku dla różnorodności, choć droga do tych wartości nie jest łatwa i bezbolesna.W dniach 22–24 maja 2017 roku odbyła się w Uniwersytecie Łódzkim i Akademii Muzycznej im. Bacewiczów w Łodzi interdyscyplinarna konferencja ze specjalnymi gośćmi z całego świata. W Łodzi obradowali m.in.: Rita Süssmuth (Niemcy), prof. Ian Hazlett (Glasgow, Szkocja), prof. lnes Murzaku (New Jersey, USA), prof. Ivo Pospíšil (Brno, Czechy), prof. Cora Dietl (Giessen, Niemcy), prof. Hans-Jürgen Bömelburg (Giessen, Niemcy).Tom zbiera wybrane aspekty kultury reformacji i reformowania w kulturze. Jest śladem tego, że wielokulturowa Łódź uczciła 500 lat reformacji, która przez dziesięciolecia odcisnęła także swój znaczący ślad w tym mieście.

- Summary/Abstract:The author of the present study deals with the whole complex of religious, cultural and artistic phenomenon linked with the rise of the European Reformation with special regard to the situation of Central and Eastern Europe and in the Slavonic literary world. He attempts to demonstrate that there are some pre-reformation streams which came into existence in the period of the Hussite wars and had a much-differentiated shape and structure. The roots of the Reformation process in its initial and ideological substance are interesting as typical phenomena of Central European social and religious thought inspired by various currents, often of Eastern origin, connected with buddhism, manicheism and zoroastrianism.

- Summary/Abstract:The article presents the relationship between the classical Protestant Thought and the postmodern World. The attempt is the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in the year 2017. The heritage of the big reformation movement in 16th century is the bright palette of Protestant churches among them Lutheran and Presbyterian, called often as evangelical. Protestant, especially Lutheran theology of the 16th century understood the human being as a Gods creature who is in permanent conflict with Evil symbolised by Satan. The anthropological formula of Luther`s theology was simul iustus et peccator. In postmodern World such description does not fit in to language and pattern of the majority of people who live in the virtual and digital reality. In the political context, they live in a post-truth World. Article refers the ideas of Zygmunt Bauman (Liquidity) and Richard Rorty (Contingency) as protagonists of the postmodern philosophy in confrontation with recent protestant thought. The conclusion is that the Protestantism should leave the older form of big narration and try to build a dialogue with postmodern human being.

- Keywords:Lutheranism; calvinism; labour’s ethic; capitalism; sociology of religion
- Summary/Abstract:The author analyses main the main achievements of Max Weber (1864 - 1920), one of the founders of sociology. Weber studied the influence of Protestant ethical attitudes on the growth of capitalism. He stated that Protestantism gave rational principles and enabled such a rapid development of this form of economy in Western Europe. The foundation of the capitalist stance were: the principle of treating work as a theological obligation, the principle of intense work for the glory of God (and not for profit), the principle of asceticism that limits the use of profit solely for further economic development (investment, not luxury), the principle of rational conduct in daily life, the principle of using time to carry out duties. The basis of specific life attitudes of Protestant capitalists was rationalism, namely the use of reason to achieve maximum economic benefits. The ideas of the Reformation introduced and became the framework of the Enlightenment.

- Summary/Abstract:The relations between Reformation and scepticism has not been clearly examined by intellectual history scholars so far. The aim of this article is to sketch possible perspectives on elaboration on the subject of two fundamental sceptical currents which are closely related to the Reformation movement: the first one being fideism or christianised scepticism, and the latter one being ethical scepticism of Erasmus and Sebastian Castellio. These ideas have been placed within a broader framework of preceding tradition, the importance of exercising doubt has been underscored and the perspectives on Polish investigation has been suggested.

- Keywords:devotion; devotio moderna; Middle Ages; Reformation; mysticism
- Summary/Abstract:The aim of the paper is to analyse the transformations of the forms of late medieval folk piety in Germany and Netherlands. Two types of late medieval religious expression were distinguished: the so-called extraverted piety, being a ritualised form faith, and the devotio moderna movement as instantiated by the mysticism of Meister Eckhart. By using the passages from The Imitation of Christ by Thomas à Kempis, De theologia mistica by Jacobus de Paradiso and Theologia Germanica both types of piety were presented as preparing the ground for the Reformation.

- Keywords:reformation; modernity; Bulgaria; history of concepts; cultural transfer
- Summary/Abstract:The article deals with the impact and reception of reformational ideas in Bulgarian culture in the perspective of modernization problems. The subject of the analysis is both the local understanding of the concepts “Reformation” and “Protestant propaganda” as well as the activity of (neo)protestant missions in the Bulgarian lands in the 19th and 20th centuries. The aim is to identify the links between Bulgarian modernity and Protestant thought and to problematize relations between cultural facts and the official discourse on the subject. The “Bulgarian case” illustrates the modern Orthodox-Protestant meeting and, in this sense, the problem of adaptation of “foreign” patterns in the process of the modernization of culture.

- Keywords:Søren Kierkegaard; sacrum; paradox; the moment-eternal
- Summary/Abstract:In this article, I aim to outline the path of Christianity’s rebirth through the spiritual renewal of the Individual, that is, a subjectively existing human being. The Danish theologian, using the paradox as an expression of some situations that reveal the existential character of human life and a tool of expression, introduces a new language and a new possibility of communicating inherently inexpressible content. From the dialectical tension and resistance which the paradox arouses through the clash of contradictions, and from the depths of its antinomity, a creative movement of thought arises. This procedure made it possible for Kierkegaard to extract a living Christian thought that freed the sacrum from the dogmatic religious tradition closed in dead rites.

- Subject(s):Philosophy, Biblical studies, Translation Studies
- Page Range:135-151

- Keywords:Bible; national language; translation; humanism; Reformation
- Summary/Abstract:The article dispels the myth that the Reformation caused interest in the Bible through critical activity of Martin Luther. The humanism of the 15th century, in the first stage of the Renaissance, through the works of Jan Gerson, Erasmus of Rotterdam, Thomas Morus, Laurentino Vall, focused interest on the Bible philosophical study, and on popularizing it in national languages. The golden era of the Polish Bible is constituted by publishing the New Testament translated by Stanisław Murzynowski in 1553, issuing the Leopolita’s Bible — the first Polish Bible translated by Jan Nicz Leopolita for the Catholic Church in 1561, editing the Jakub Wujek Bible in 1599 for Jesuits and the Gdańsk Bible in 1632, translated by Daniel Mikołajewski.

- Summary/Abstract:This paper tries to present Pietism as a current and set of ideas linked to the Enlightenment, as a culture focused on individualism and “subjectification”, as well as on the need to dismantle the old authorities and hierarchies. Such a way of thinking is visible in the religious poetry at that time, with the Danish pastor Hans Adolph Brorson. His main work The Rare Jewel of the Faith (Troens rare Klenodie, 1739), a collection of hymns used in the Danish and Norwegian church till today, belongs to the canon of the Danish literature.

- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Christian Theology and Religion, Poetry, Polish Literature
- Page Range:171-184

- Keywords:Adam Mickiewicz; biography; poetry; maxim; Lutheranism
- Summary/Abstract:The paper attempts to present Adam Mickiewicz’s idea behind the ‘Lutheran spirit’ against a background of the vicissitudes of producing Poezje (Poetry), vol. 8 (1836). The author of the article ponders why the poet returns to the Lutheran mentality based on the need for forging an individual bond with God outside church. Consequently, the author’s interest revolves around Mickiewicz’s project of spirituality, created in the eight volume of the Paris edition, which goes beyond Catholicism and blurs the boundaries between Christian denominations.

- Page Range:185-196
- No. of Pages:12
- Keywords:ethics; diary; morality; biography; religious tradition
- Summary/Abstract:This article shows an influence of Martin Luther’s understanding of ethics on the ideas concerning these matters presented by Jerzy Pilch — a contemporary Polish writer. Ethical questions and the reflections connected with them are one of the main subjects of his considerations in Dzienniki (Diaries) (2012, 2014). In his approach towards ethical problems you can see on the one hand an individual attitude, which was called by Luther “freedom from” or practical life for God, and on the other hand — a sociable attitude or “freedom to” displayed in a disposition of living for others. Everything that is concerned with morality in Pilch’s diaries, their author comments carrying out a dialogue with Lutheran tradition and provoking its adherents of Lutheranism. These, mainly ironical statements, should nonetheless be treated as the testimony of his inner struggle with the Protestant tradition and the resulting vision of the world. Katarzyna Kubisiowska, in her monograph dedicated to Pilch, puts the reader gently to this track. However, to arrive at the core of envoi of the author of Diaries, it is necessary to employ the work of a scholar, who would be able to combine three skills in his research: literary, theological and ethical.

- Subject(s):Cultural history, Poetry, Polish Literature
- Page Range:197-211
- No. of Pages:15
- Keywords:Julia Hartwig; 20th Polish Poetry; music and literature; reformation
- Summary/Abstract:The poems by Julia Hartwig, Schütz’s Cantata from the volume Obcowanie (1987) and Bach’s Cantata from Czułość (1992), constitute a poetic record of the reception of ancient musical works (which are gaining more and more popularity in modern times). The poet is interested in cantatas by Schütz i Bach — religious works of art of two baroque composers from 17th and 18th century, whose artistic activity was strictly connected with Lutheran spirituality and liturgy. For the poet these cantatas are not only the source of aesthetic experience. Its reception (most probably from the radio, recordings or concerts) becomes a great inspiration for existential and religious reflections. It also makes the poet recognise their uniqueness: as being examples of theocentric art and deep religiousness of their composers, these cantatas reveal the ability to harmonise the human psyche, and consequently they seem to be a perfect art form.

- Page Range:213-227
- No. of Pages:15
- Keywords:The Apocalypse; the Lord of the Apocalypse; the Civil War; the Book of Revelation; freedom; slave spirituals
- Summary/Abstract:Due to the horrors and evils of slavery blacks firmly believed in God’s promise of retribution against the wickedness and cruelty of those slaveholders who brutalized them. The Apocalypse exerted a powerful influence on slaves and was viewed as the Bible’s main argument that God denounced slavery and would come in a catastrophic event to judge those who mistreated blacks. The language of cosmic struggle between good and evil was vividly embraced by the poets of slave spirituals and themes of the end of time pervaded the texts of many songs. Slave spirituals reflect Apocalyptic thinking among blacks who viewed themselves as brave soldiers fighting on the side of Christ in the coming war of Armageddon. The paper explores how blacks perceived themselves as valiant soldiers fighting in the army of the Lord of the Apocalypse. We will see that slaves alluded to the belief in the inevitability of the military struggle over slavery and thus anticipated the Civil War.

- Page Range:229-244
- No. of Pages:16
- Keywords:Christianity; faith; musical sermon; reason; Enlightenment; the West
- Summary/Abstract:Today, Bach’s music enjoys a huge interest and popularity in the West. However, this situation is paradoxical – it hides a certain contradiction. The progressive, liberal and secular West is an heir of the ideas of the Enlightenment, while “Bach, in his unswerving religious conservatism, was living and working very much at odds with the progressivist currents of his day, and ours” (Michael Marissen). The author of this paper focuses on Bach’s anti-Enlightenment attitude, presenting it mainly on the basis of the instrumental masterpiece Musikalisches Opfer BWV 1079. Towards the end of his article, with the help of Emil Cioran, John M. Coetzee, Ingmar Bergman and Zuzana Růžičkova, the author suggests an answer to the question why the music of Bach, an enemy of the Enlightenment, not only enjoys such a huge popularity, but is also treated in the Enlightened West as the work of the grandest music genius of the human race – one ranking among its best achievements.
