Polish Social Sciences in the Context of Relations of Power and International Dependencies
Contributor(s): Tomasz Zarycki (Editor)
Subject(s): Social Sciences, Sociology

Keywords: Pierre Bourdieu; field analysis; social science; sociology; philosophy of law; historiography; linguistics; literary theory; modern art
Summary/Abstract: The collective monograph offers a novel sociological approach to contemporary history of Poland, including especially Polish science and art. The studies it brings together apply different versions of historical sociology, in most cases inspired by Pierre Bourdieu’s theory. This means that the disciplines they discuss (sociology, philosophy of law, historiography, linguistics, literary theory, dependency theory, and art) are treated as social fields whose dynamics may also be analysed in terms of their interactions with other fields. Another important aspect of the studies is their reference to the global history paradigm, where social processes are examined from the perspective of grand spatial and temporal structures.

- Summary/Abstract:The text provides a brief introduction to the entire volume, which is primarily the fruit of the research project entitled “Sociological Theory of Meaning: Power Fields and Social Sciences in Processes of Semiosis”, funded by the National Science Center and carried out at the Professor Robert Zajonc Institute of Social Studies, University of Warsaw, under the supervision of the editor of this volume. The common theoretical framework of the texts is pointed out, in particular the references to global historical sociology and Pierre Bourdieu’s paradigm of field analysis. The aims of the work are briefly outlined, as well as possible ways of using it in further development of the social sciences in Poland.

- Author(s):Tomasz Zarycki
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Sociology
- Page Range:13-44
- No. of Pages:32
- Keywords:field of power; intelligentsia; homology; revolution; October 1956; March 1968
- Summary/Abstract:The first aim of the chapter is to outline a broader perspective on the concept of field of power and the accompanying theoretical apparatus associated with Pierre Bourdieu’s sociology. This is followed by a general attempt to relate the concept to the Polish context. It includes considerations on the application of the concept to synthesize the structures of Polish elites in particular historical periods starting from the second half of the 19th century. In relation to this period, the possibility of introducing the concept of proto-field of power has been suggested, which refers to the organization of Polish elites within imperial political systems. Then the transformations of the field of power in subsequent periods until modern times are discussed. Particular attention is paid to the turning points in which the geometry of the field of power changed fundamentally. These included the revolutionary situations of 1919, 1945, 1956, 1968 and 1989. The chapter also indicates how the field of power can be seen as a generator of social meanings.

- Keywords:state; revolution; empire; social conflict; Poland
- Summary/Abstract:The article scrutinizes revolutionary processes and state-crafting in the ethnically diverse, “overdeveloped” imperial borderland which in 1918 became part of the Polish state. My goal is to deprovincialize and denationalize the narrative on the genesis of this state. I do so by viewing the 1905–1921 sequence as one of the possible variants of the “great imperial revolution”, a local recombination of global forces and regional power bids. A rapid democratization co-occurred with a consolidation of national community and ethnic conflict. As a result, institutionalized forms of conflict reflecting the balance of social forces were largely lacking. Only a peculiar sequence of events enabled the creation of a state, capable of consolidation and confrontation with alternative revolutionary scripts.

- Author(s):Tomasz Warczok
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Sociology
- Page Range:77-103
- No. of Pages:27
- Keywords:crisis; field of power; anti-Semitism; degree inflation
- Summary/Abstract:The chapter is devoted to two fundamental and seemingly disparate crises in Poland – the anti-Jewish riots at Polish universities in the 1930s and the anti-Semitic campaign in March 1968 (along with the acute conflict in the core of the Polish United Workers’ Party), occurring in the context of the student revolt of the time. Both crises, contrary to the dominant narratives and common-sense as well as scholarly explanations, were based not so much on negative beliefs, stereotypes, and self-reproducing ideologies, but on structural changes, namely, the inflation of university degrees. This inflation, however, affected the sectors of the field of power to varying degrees, with the result that anti-Semitic riots appeared only where there was a problem with reproducing social positions. This highlights the importance of structural analysis, which explains the emergence of conflicts, crises and hateful ideologies more precisely and accurately than even the most complex formal analyses (of discourses, prejudices, attitudes, etc.).

- Author(s):Hanna Dębska

- Subject(s):Sociology
- Page Range:105-137
- No. of Pages:33
- Keywords:sociology of law; scientific field; space of possibilities; scientific strategies; Adam Podgórecki; Maria Borucka-Arctowa
- Summary/Abstract:The article presents the history of the field of Polish sociology of law from the perspective of Pierre Bourdieu’s field theory. It analyzes the social conditions that allowed the sociology of law to emerge as a separate discipline among legal sciences at a given historical moment, especially the process of its autonomization from the dominant theory and philosophy of law. Moreover, a comparative analysis is conducted of the scientific trajectories of the two main founders of the discipline – Maria Borucka-Arctowa and Adam Podgórecki. This research perspective makes it possible to supplement the approaches represented in the literature so far. It allows for explaining the different scientific practices that Borucka-Arctowa and Podgórecki undertook (and the related benefits) by capturing the dialectics between the space of possibilities that the scientific field “offered” them and the dispositions shaped in them, and, furthermore, by focusing on tracing their scientific production and the space of reception of their works, it aims to assess the profitability of their investments.

- Author(s):Maria Tyl
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Sociology
- Page Range:139-154
- No. of Pages:16
- Keywords:Polish field of art; Polish art after 1945; autonomy of art; artistic system
- Summary/Abstract:This article proposes to observe the post-1945 evolution of the Polish field of art from the point of view of the mechanisms that determined its functioning after the Second World War: from heteronomy, characteristic of the Socialist Realism period, to the relative autonomy achieved in the early 1980s. The author divides this history into three stages: 1945–1953 (post-war years and Socialist Realism), 1953–1964 (the Thaw, opening of borders), 1964–1981 (gradual weakening of the central cultural system controlled by the party-state authorities), which she then interprets in analogy to three artistic systems, which are widely discussed in the context of the development of the international field of art from the turn of the 18th century to the 1980s: the academic system, the dealer-critic system, and the dealer-curator system.

- Author(s):Tomasz Warczok
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Sociology
- Page Range:155-183
- No. of Pages:29
- Keywords:sociology; sociological field; field of power; reproduction; symbolic struggle
- Summary/Abstract:The chapter presents a synthetic history of the emergence of the Polish universe of sociology. The analysis – based on Pierre Bourdieu’s field theory – is divided into several key historical periods, with particular emphasis on the moment of the structuring of the field itself (in the interwar period), the post-war restructuring and reconfiguration of the 1960s and 1970s, up to the fundamental transformation taking place after 1989. In each of these periods, crucial fronts of symbolic struggle, processes of continuity and rupture were reconstructed. However, all these structuralizations were presented in the often overlooked context of the reproduction and reconfiguration of the field of power in Poland, which has been a kind of meta-space, organizing the most important social fields, from politics, through religion, to the academic and artistic worlds.

(The field of linguistics and literary studies in Poland)
- Author(s):Tomasz Zarycki
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Sociology
- Page Range:185-227
- No. of Pages:43
- Keywords:linguistics; literary studies; poetics; structuralism; formalism; Polish studies
- Summary/Abstract:The chapter is an attempt to take a synthetic look at the history of Polish linguistics and literary studies from the mid-19th century to the present day. The proposed approach analyzes the global, international conditions of the dynamics of this broadly defined field, from the imperial context to the fall of communism. A number of comparisons with the dynamics of development of other disciplines are also proposed. The author pays particular attention to the history of the Polish structuralist school (including the formalists). Their example allows him to examine the factors determining the international recognition of Polish humanists and social scientists in certain periods, and its lack in others. He also discusses in more detail the biographies of several scholars who illustrate these mechanisms well, in particular Jan Niecisław Baudouin de Courtenay, Stefan Żółkiewski and Maria R. Mayenowa.

- Keywords:historiography; Stalinism; intelligentsia; historical policy; nomenclature
- Summary/Abstract:Understanding historical policy in Poland as a product of a power struggle taking place at the intersection of several fields (especially the scientific, political, and bureaucratic fields) and involving actors with unequal resources in these different fields allows us to go beyond the previous scholarship on the topic. The structure of the relationship between the bureaucratic field and the scientific field is partly determined by the actions of effective actors, in this case historians, who support a historical policy. Viewed from a relatively long sociohistorical perspective, the structure of the relationship between these fields reveals a form of continuity, characterized by the existence of a pole of production of official history, but also remarkable evolutions: at several moments during the Polish People’s Republic, historians most equipped with scientific capital were able to maintain a form of autonomy of historiographical production in the face of orders from the authorities.

- Keywords:transformation/transition; Poland; university; intelligentsia; elites; Immanuel Wallerstein
- Summary/Abstract:The article focuses on the important but so far little studied phenomenon of the impact that the systemic transformations/transitions in Eastern Europe exerted on the field of social sciences, in the dimension of ideas and scientific theories as well as in the realm of career trajectories of scholars. We examine this phenomenon by analyzing the example of the Polish researchers from various fields of social science who during the communist period formed an informal network of scholars studying underdevelopment in the context of global dependencies. What is shown in particular is the formation of a specific “ecosystem” of researchers and its spectacular disappearance in the wake of global ideological changes and, more locally, of reshuffling within the elites. The presented analysis contributes to the understanding of the functioning of Polish intellectual elites and global transformations of social science.
