Summary/Abstract: The article presents the history of the field of Polish sociology of law from the perspective of Pierre Bourdieu’s field theory. It analyzes the social conditions that allowed the sociology of law to emerge as a separate discipline among legal sciences at a given historical moment, especially the process of its autonomization from the dominant theory and philosophy of law. Moreover, a comparative analysis is conducted of the scientific trajectories of the two main founders of the discipline – Maria Borucka-Arctowa and Adam Podgórecki. This research perspective makes it possible to supplement the approaches represented in the literature so far. It allows for explaining the different scientific practices that Borucka-Arctowa and Podgórecki undertook (and the related benefits) by capturing the dialectics between the space of possibilities that the scientific field “offered” them and the dispositions shaped in them, and, furthermore, by focusing on tracing their scientific production and the space of reception of their works, it aims to assess the profitability of their investments.
