Summary/Abstract: The publication, created to celebrate the jubilee of Romance studies at the University of Lodz, is a polyphonic reflection on the art of living / surviving, reviving. The chosen topic deals with the issues of a breakthrough, a reevaluation of the current modus vivendi. It also discusses the issue of relations with time, the themes of passing away, returning, and duration. From the perspective of literary studies, this topic was captured as the art of life understood as a set of intellectual, emotional, spiritual and moral attitudes of an individual towards existence in specific communities and in specific historical and socio-political conditions. The scientific character of the publication is ensured by an organized choice of content aimed at analyzing the aforementioned points, based on a wide corpus of texts from various eras and countries, and the use of multiple methodologies supported by a carefully selected bibliography. Since the monograph addresses the needs of a wide range of readers (students, literary scholars, literature lovers who speak Romance languages), it has the potential to exert considerable social influence.

- Summary/Abstract:The plague as a terrifying phenomenon affecting people has been a constant “topos” in literature since antiquity. Its nature and the mysterious way in which it appeared attracted the attention and imagination of poets, who explained it as a punishment sent by the gods for the failings of people who broke the divine commandments and norms. This is how it was depicted by Homer, followed by the tragedians. However, we owe one of the most poignant images of this disease to Thucydides, the Greek historian of the 5th century BC. He created a faithful and at the same time shocking description of it, because it exposed the most shameful aspects of “anthopeia physis”, human nature. The signalled issues will become the subject of description in this article.

- Summary/Abstract:The Black Death that ravaged Europe in the second half of the 14th century inspired much Middle Ages to think about explaining the trigger for the disease, but all accounts coincide on an underlying rationale: the divine anger falling on Men. The field of art echoes the trauma caused by the pandemic to populations and the fear that leads to extreme behaviour (flagellants, dance of death, expiatory processions, etc.). Literature does not fail to stage the plague either, as evidenced by the Decameron, which in its first pages describes the plague which is reaching the West through Italy. The hagiography, in turn, and specifically the genre of the Lives of Saints, becomes a significant source of information on the description and repercussions of the disease in Europe. Thus, in this contribution we propose to analyse “La Vie et légende de monseigneur saint Roch”, a French incunable of Jehan Phelipot published in 1494, which went through three editions, in order to see how in the hagiographic text Roch’s ascent to holiness revolves around the theme of the plague disease and how the text becomes a source of information on the pandemic and its consequences.

- Summary/Abstract:In his “Histoires admirables” (Lyon, 1653), Benoît Gonon, a little-known author of short exemplary novels, tells many stories about horrific cases of pestilence sweeping and tormenting people in various parts of the world throughout the ages – from late Antiquity to more recent plague of the XIVth century which took Europe by storm. Gonon sees those gruesome stories as an excellent opportunity to teach his readers an important lesson and ask whether such an event could possibly be, rather than a natural phenomenon, an ultimate punishment sent by the wrath of God. One of the sins that could demand such a punishment is idolatry, considered by Gonon himself, to be the most reprehensible of all the sins. It is merely surprising then, that in his stories, the pestilence is being depicted as a demon – or an idol. In this paper, I am going to explore the stories about pestilence in “Histoires admirables” and answer the questions about the nature of pestilence. Which crimes could lead to people being punished in such a way? How to appease God’s wrath? Can pestilence manifest itself by demonic activity?

- Summary/Abstract:Historians of medicine often write of the “psychosis” and “the omnipresent fear” that, in the Middle Ages, paralyzed the whole European population, due to the many mysteries that surrounded the plague, its origin, its inexplicable recurrence and its nature. These mysteries led to an abundance of treatises on the plague written in Latin as well as in the vernacular, which appeared in the XVIth and XVIIth centuries in France. Their authors, physicians, barber-surgeons and apothecaries, advanced theories and proposed efficient prophylactic treatments. Our research is concerns principally with the status of the proposed remedies, in particular on the importance of their aromas. We first consider the role assigned to the quality of the air (climate, home), to its alterations and to the best means of improving it (fumigation, incense). We then examine the aromatic composition of the remedies proposed, focusing on their forms and uses.

- Summary/Abstract:Literary career of Jean-Pierre Camus started with his admiration for Montaigne’s “Essais” which became the pattern of his first work, “Les Diversitez”. The tome IX of this rich collection of various forms concerns passions of the soul and scholars are unanimous in considering it as the foundation of his religious teaching, both by word and by writing. Contrary to medical and moral thought in force at the threshold of modernity, the bishop of Belley believes passions are neutral, neither good nor bad, and acquire their meaning by the use man makes of them. This is in particular the case of jealousy which the writer understands as an effect of love. Yet in his treaty of passions the author describes on just several pages only the jealousy of God and for more details he refers the reader to two other places of “Les Diversitez” where, he says, he has already raised the issue of this feeling. In fact, a chapter of the tome II and a letter of the tome VIII deal with the problem of human jealousy. This paper first shows different discursive forms that Camus uses to analyze jealousy. Then it focuses on the author’s definition of jealousy, ‘desire for exclusive possession of the loved object’, and on its effects – often tragical, always painful – in the daily life of spouses. Finally, it appears that the author’s taste for dichotomous presentation of passions leads him to childish images of jealous God and implicitly to an inacceptable hypothesis of jealousy of the creature in front of a supposedly unfaithful God.

Mme de Murat copes with the oppression of royal power by leading a life similar to that from which she was cut off. She finds consolation in the writing of the diary and affection for her cousin, she writes poems and organises literary and social life in exile demonstrating freedom of her spirit.

- Summary/Abstract:The present paper focuses on the travel of Eugène Delacroix to Morocco (first six months of 1832) and his accounts given in his travel notes, letters and an unfinished travelogue, “Souvenirs d’un voyage dans le Maroc”. The writings of the famous painter are contrasted with the book by a Moroccan writer, Tahar Ben Jelloun, “Lettre à Delacroix” (2005). The aim of the paper is to define the art of living “à la marocaine” according to the French painter and the Moroccan writer. It is done in three parts. The first one is devoted to the beauty of Moroccan landscapes, horses and architecture. The second focuses on the art of dressing : the beauty of the inhabitants of the country and the elegance of their cloths. The last part discusses Moroccan traditions, based – according to Delacroix – on Antiquity.

- Summary/Abstract:In 1946, only a year after the World War II, Jean Giono, who became famous in the years 1929-1939 as a writer describing the human’s struggle with nature, writes “A King Alone” (“Un roi sans divertissement”), a novel which surprises his past readers with one of the characters being a serial killer fulfilling the uncontrolled need for entertainment by killing people. Langlois, the gendarmerie captain tasked with finding the murderer, attempts to understand the motive of the criminal turned from a respected and exemplary citizen into a potential assassin. Not to become the felon’s imitator, Langlois commits suicide. Giono’s novel is a tale of evil inextricably linked to human nature (the murderer’s name is Monsieur V. like in “voisin” – neighbor). The novel did not gain the popularity it deserved because after the World War II evil was the most willingly looked for in the defeated countries of the Axis (Germany, Italy, Japan), and the communist-opposed author was blacklisted by National Writers’ Committee, controlled by the Stalinists. “A King Alone” is a personal reflection of a writer marked by war, constituting the expression of his most pessimistic vision of human nature influenced by Machiavelli, Hobbes and Sade. The message of the novel is ambiguous: on the one hand, Langlois prefers committing suicide over being a tool of evil residing in every person; on the other hand, he interiorizes Mr. V.’s motives by exploring them, thus becoming – like any other human in Giono’s view – a potential killer. Langlois’ last act, when he takes his own life, makes him a figure of dark Christ, permeated by evil, who sacrifices himself not to become another link in the chain of malevolent individuals passing on to the potential imitators the penchant for killing, understood here as the highest form of entertainment and the contemplation of human mortality, embodied by the victim.

- Summary/Abstract:Simone de Beauvoir’s texts show the acute presence of history in the writer’s life, and the futility of individual human actions, a sense of meaningless life, which contrasts with the author’s optimistic vision of the world. For this reason, the human being feels lost and crippled, especially a woman for whom the reality of war means alienation, anxiety, inability to fulfill the dream of unity with another person. This approach allows the author, who is an existentialist, to pay special attention to gender antagonism and social roles assigned to the eternally (dominant) man and (subordinate) woman. Beauvoir’s writing becomes the cry of an individual forced to face his own helplessness, failure and tragedy of the world. Struggling with loneliness, the feminine characters, disappointed, subject to the dictates of time, live only in the present, bereft of the past and future, by the fault of the Other. However, despite being aware of failure they fight against adversity in search for a better life.

- Summary/Abstract:In this article, the author studies the dramas which, while exposing the absurdity of war, express an apocalyptic vision of humanity doomed to its destruction. Whether it is Reinhard Goering’s “Sea battle” or Arrabal’s dramas (“Picnic on the Battlefield” and “Guernica”) we are witnessing an obvious renewal of the tragedy. However, the authors do not apply the rules specific to the canonical genre, but by shining a light on the precarious condition of modern man, they paint a world in its self-destruction where there is no place for catharsis. Tragic in its modernized version inevitably provokes the shaking of the dramatic form which testifies not only to human agony but also to that of dramatic art. In fact, the two playwrights undermine the main foundations of “absolute drama”, deconstructing the action in the classic sense of the word and depriving their characters of their active attributes of a hero of traditional theater.

- Summary/Abstract:On January 7th 2015, Philippe Lançon, a journalist at “Libération” and at “Charlie Hebdo” attends the newspaper’s premises, when the islamist terrorists attack. The killers’bullets tear his jaws off, severely injure his arms, make his existence capsize, but he survives. In his novel “Le Lambeau”, he tells the story of a mental as well as physical reconstruction, sketching the chronology of his days in various hospitals, depicting the visitors who make his days brighter and the varied shades of his consciousness. Is his writing, a mere testimony of a tragical experiment, the chronicles of a journalist who witnesses how one comes back to life? Or is it a “pharmakon”, a poison within a remedy, which puts back to life things past and gone, as a way of healing? Or shall we give a spiritual significance to this writing, so haunted by Proust that it parodies his style and shows literature as a means of salvation?

- Summary/Abstract:French writer Albert Robida, renowned for his futuristic works of fiction written in a bitter-sweet tone, somehow broke away from his usual inspiration in “The Clock of the Centuries” (published in 1902), as electric life short-circuited. This atypical novel opens up, in the early stages of the twentieth century Robida now refuses to anticipate and explore, with a cataclysm that all but extinguishes every form of life on earth and gives a symbolic warning that there is something wrong in the civilized world. Survival is organized, but Robida then subverts the “post-apocalyptic” narrative to introduce an unprecedented variation: the survivors realize that, after the catastrophe, an “out-of-joint” universe, in which the hands of time are now ticking in reverse, has now taken over. Comic relief is provided by the heroes getting younger and historical figures being brought back to life, but conceals the violence of the continuity solution staged by Robida in this counter-clockwise anticipation novel, as the restoration of order is achieved under the aegis of a mutilated Janus. This gave the momentum for an anti-progressive eschatology, which turned out to have a great future in literature.

Without history, there is no longer a past or a future; only the present persists as a perpetual replication of the same structures. In “1984”, everything is constantly rewritten in minute detail. In “Globalia”, the system wages a fierce war against history. Art is either recuperated or condemned to burn at the stake of state power (“Fahrenheit 451”). However, discovering art objects from past times and reading literary works signal a change of course which raises conscience and even leads to acts of resistance. In dystopian speculative literature, resistance acquires a symbolic dimension: Despite reigning darkness, there seems to appear a gleam of hope thanks to art and to literature.

- Summary/Abstract:In “L’Apocalypse de 2030”, “Chroniques de la fin du monde” and “La fin des temps”, three novels by French, American and Japanese authors respectively, the novelists try to hold up a mirror to readers of our world that has become a field of ruin, but they do not fail to warn that the crisis of the present is nothing compared to what awaits us in the decade of 2030. In this gruesome setting, the question of survival remains the major leitmotif of this apocalyptic corpus. By analysing these works under the scalpel of psychocriticism, the critic comes to the conclusion that the authors are taking a critical look at the catastrophic situation of the world, with both compassion and indignation. But beyond their essentially anxiety-provoking and presentist vein, apocalyptic fictions propose a rather anxiolytic framework, oriented towards the future and the conduct to be maintained in this ‘crisis of time’. The authors of apocalyptic literature, far from being “the horsemen of the apocalypse”, set themselves up as prophets of the days of doubt.

Hence my reflection followed in two stages: first, I propose to see the theological concepts of the author, anchored in the study of biblical and Koranic texts, in the spirit of religious pluralism, and then, to analyze the modes of living together of Christians among Muslims at the time of rupture. In this second part, I am inspired by the rule of Saint Benedict and the work of Michel de Certeau who perceives daily practices as an act of resistance.

- Summary/Abstract:In the article the author analyses the influence of post-memory in the formation of national and individual identity among the inhabitants of the young Republic of Mauritius presented in contemporary Mauritian literature in French. Important and at the same time tragic historical events of Mauritius are: slavery, the arrival and labour of indentured workers from India and the tragedy of the Chagos Islanders. The author analyses some texts by Ananda Devi and Shenaz Patel in which both writers describe the impact of ancestral history on the lives of characters representing the next generation from different ethnic groups living on the island. In her analysis, the author refers to the works of Marianne Hirsch, Paul Ricœur and Alex Mucchielli.

- Summary/Abstract:The objective of the study is to identify and examine the essential elements which constitute the concept of the “Other” in the novels of Giuseppe Culicchia. The texts analyzed were published by Culicchia, writer, essayist and translator in Turin, Italy, from 1994 to 2019. The theoretical literary perspective is that of mimesis (Erich Auerbach, Zofia Mitosek, Nicoletta Salomon, Cesare Segre) and the concept of the “l’Altro” derives from anthropological studies (Marc Augé, Marco Aime, Ugo Fabietti, Francesco Remotti). The purpose of this study is to promote interdisciplinary research and to present the model of the Other and its evolution in novels. The article focuses on aspects of otherness, more apparent in Culicchia, that is to say: distance and space (the idea of nonluogo, mente locale, mobility), set of values and the consequent changes in the characters of his novels.

- Summary/Abstract:In the last decades, many studies have proliferated on the different ways in which a specific modality of consumer society, characterized by an unbridled acceleration of the rhythms of production and work, affects the lives of millions of people, especially in highly industrialized nations. These studies suggest that the individuals, under the pressure of an increasingly accelerated and frenetic pace of life, are compelled to perform certain roles and achieve certain goals that, if satisfactorily fulfilled, could guarantee success, or, at least, social acceptance. But what happens when the individual cannot or do not want to perform and fulfil such roles and expectations fast enough, when the individual prolongs or just abandons the entrusted task? In the richly diverse world of Latin American fiction, many writers have tackled this question. In base of three novels of different years: “El libro vacío” (1958), by the Mexican Josefina Vicens, “Wasabi” (1994), by the Argentine Alan Pauls, and “La novela luminosa” (2005), by the Uruguayan Mario Levrero, this paper comments the role played in contemporary fiction by the figure of the apathic, indolent or just slow-moving writer. The main characters of those novels seem to live in a slow-time dimension opposed to the fast one dominant in late modernity.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper aims to develop a comparative perspective that allows the reader to explore the traces of authoritarian systems in contemporary Polish and Spanish culture. The point of departure is the research of Polish scholars from the Post-Dependence Studies Centre, who examine Polish culture with postcolonial tools adapted to the post-communist context. From there, the article attempts to formulate a methodological framework — the so-called post-transitional subaltern studies — applicable to post-Franco and post-communist culture, particularly the presence of subaltern characters in contemporary cultural texts. In accordance with the proposed methodology, the author analyses two novels, namely “Visión del ahogado” (1977) by Juan José Millás and “Czytadło” (1992) by Tadeusz Konwicki, in which it is possible to detect similar panoptic strategies concomitant with the recourse to violence.

- Summary/Abstract:Ana Blandiana, an internationally recognized writer, has been an opponent of the dictatorial regime of Nicolae Ceaușescu. She is a censored poet, she has had to fight to find a way of conveying her words. She has become a symbol of the Resistance, and despite the prohibition she has continued to write; several of her stories and poems are both a reflection and a critique of how she lived under communist totalitarianism. Blandiana finds in writing a way of living. She ties her works to the fantastic genre, which are divided between a dream world and a historical reality. The dream is the place chosen by the writer to be able to express herself freely through the voice of her characters. In addition to the spatial duality, Blandiana chooses to situate her narrations in a temporal duality. The protagonists find themselves immersed in the writer’s own past, and in an eternal present through which she projects her hopes for a better future.

The central plot in the novel revolves around an unhappy marriage, with the wife experiencing violence from her husband. The dramatic situation became a common element in many novels written by women of that time, hence the paradigmatic value of a general condition of feminine struggle that defines a consequent attitude and ability of surviving to adverse historical and social circumstances.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper main theme is Esther in Purim parodies. As a study case, the Jewish community in Rome is taken into consideration. In spite of the relatively small numbers of Holocaust victims among the Italian Jews, the traumatic memories of persecution were well present in the survivors’ awareness. In the early post-war years, they felt a pressing need to pass on their knowledge of the Holocaust to the younger. Apart from academic papers and literary works of import, a number of popular texts appeared. One example is a version of the Tale of Purim written around 1950. The narration carries on the Italian tradition of Aggadah-style literature, and its language makes it one of the latest documents featuring idioms of the now forgotten Jewish-Roman dialect. In the tale, the Holocaust is referred to by equalling Hitler to the persecutor of the Jews as of Megillath Esther. In that fashion, Esther as a literary character wanders from the ancient religious discourse to the extra-literary actuality.

- Summary/Abstract:The article studies a theatrical project presented in Teatro de la Comedia in Madrid by Alberto Conejero, with Susi Sánchez y José Troncoso, based on “El príncipe constante” by Calderón: “Esta primavera fugitive” (“Varaciones sobre” “El príncipe constante” de Calderón de la Barca). The performance was commissioned by Compañía Nacional de Teatro Clásico and staged on 17th of March 2021. The playwright converged several voices in his personal recast to manifest the strength and universality of “El príncipe constante”. The “mise-en-abyme” effect is stressed by the presence of Alberto in his play, as well as the mention of Jerzy Grotowski, Ryszard Cieślak and Juliusz Słowacki, the author of the Polish version of “The Constant Prince”. Different testimonies confirm the fundamental function of theater as ars vitae.

Considering the immense wounds inflicted on the anonymous people of all nations during the Second World War, the scenario proposes to oppose this unprecedented catastrophe with a romantic encounter, in which the authors attempt to identify the irreducibility of affects and feelings, as a condition for renewing the living of a fractured humanity that is more sensitive than ever.

- Summary/Abstract:In this article I focus on examining the reception of Roberto Rossellini’s films in Polish film journals (period: 1946-1956) and cultural magazines. The analysis shows that while Rossellini’s first post-war film – “Roma città aperta” – was positively received in the People's Republic of Poland until 1949, from the early 1950s onwards – i.e. during the Stalinist period – there was a rather critical turn, as Soviet cinema and the poetics of socialist realism came to the fore. From this moment on, Italian neo-realism was accused of pessimism and of having lost its “great revolutionary prospects”. This critical attitude changed during the so-called thaw period, when neorealism became a kind of reference model. However, because of their explicit religious themes, some neo-realist films were not allowed by the censorship in the Polish film circuit; as a consequence, some Rossellini’s films were never screened in cinemas in the People’s Republic of Poland.

- Summary/Abstract:The present article analyzes the translation of Zygmunt Miłoszewski’s novel “Jak zawsze” (“As usual”) into French (translation: Kamil Barbarski, title: “Te souviendras-tu de demain?”) and focuses particularly on the play between implicit and explicit elements related to the history and culture of Poland. The protagonists of the novel travel back in time fifty years to Poland, where it occurs that history unfolded completely differently than in reality. They have the opportunity to relive their lives in a different world, but it occurs that although their private lives will turn out differently, the history of Poland will end as usual. Miłoszewski uses stereotypes and allusions which, without explication in translation, will be incomprehensible or will lose their “raison d’être”. The author analyzes the translator’s strategies and the ability to understand the text by the recipient of the translation.
