Summary/Abstract: “Young Slavistics IV” is the seventh consecutive publication in a series of annual publications of doctoral students from the Department of Slavonic Studies in Brno. The book was introduced by a study from Prof. Ivo Pospíšil called “Generations in Literary Criticism, Their Fame and Traumas”. There are also six studies by doctoral students of different Slavonic fields, in which the students focus on specific chosen topics of Slavonic literatures, languages and cultures. Their research is based on dissertations currently being prepared. Therefore, the publication is a presentation of current research topics solved in Brno by young students of Slavonic studies and at the same time they indicate the trends which this emerging generation of researchers brings to contemporary Slavonic research.

- Summary/Abstract:The author of the present article deals with the lives of several generations of literary scholars and critics in the Czech, Ukrainian and Russian environment in hard times of Stalinism and post-Stalinist periods (the periods of thaw, glasnost and perestroika, after the fall of the U.S.S.R.) covering the time span from the 1950s up to the present day. The main aim of this treatise consists in the comparison of all the three cultural and scholarly environment under approximately the same regimes, the analysis of the ideological impact interfering in the intrinsic methodology of literary criticism at the material of the memoirs of several Czech, Ukrainian, and Russian literary scholars and critics. Though the working conditions of literary criticism in all the mentioned countries were not favourable, the critics have more or less successfully overcome various ideological obstacles and reached the scholarly results which cannot be ignored even nowadays; due to their quality, the contemporary critics cannot do without them. The memoir texts written by two outstanding Czech specialists in Russian studies, by an Ukrainian literary scholar and by a Russo-Ukrainian literary critic demonstrate the complicated social and working conditions, the confused functioning of “thick“ literary journals in Soviet times during the thaw period and after 1970. The author of the present article comes to the conclusion that every scholarly generation has its fame and traumas; it has always depended on the quality of its work, creativity and vital energy and on all the social and political obstacles so that the results of scholarly work might preserve its inspiring value worth attention for both present and forthcoming generations.

- Summary/Abstract:The coexistence of the majority Slovenian population and the immigrants from the southern states of the former Yugoslavia, who are derogatorily called chefurs (čefurji) in Slovenian, has long been a topic of discussion and, as such, has found its way into literature. The paper compares two major novels that revolve around this theme, Fužine Blues by Andrej Skubic and Southern Scum Go Home! by Goran Vojnović, and the differences and similarities in the way they approach this sensitive topic. In the introduction, the paper discusses theizbrisani, or the “erased”, which is a group of people heavily involved in the tensions between native Slovenians and chefurs. The main section of the paper presents and analyses the stereotypes around the chefurs and the Fužine housing estate in Ljubljana known for its strong presence of the chefur minority. The final part of the paper examines the unique language used in both novels.

- Summary/Abstract:Osmo Antero Viinikainen, born in 1941 in Kotka, is a Finnish author and artist whose novel Aleksis Kivi ja serbian prinsessa (“Aleksis Kivi and the Serbian Princess”, 1996) connects two vastly different worlds using the figure of Aleksis Kivi, who is considered to be the father of Finnish literature. The novel is based on Kivi’s greatest work and the first novel written in Finnish, Seven Brothers. Besides Aleksis Kivi himself, the characters in Viinikainen’s grotesque novel include the characters from Kivi’s novel and a number of historic figures, including Serbian historic figures from the Obrenović and the Karađorđević dynasties. The paper examines the novel from the thematic and historical perspective and focuses on the perception of the historical figures in the novel and the credibility of the novel itself. As the novel is not dated, the paper also explores the historical events mentioned in the novel and their accuracy to establish a timeline.

- Summary/Abstract:The literary process in any culture and country continues to evolve due to political, social and historical factors; another important factor in the modern era is the popularisation of trends. The changeable nature of literary genres, topics and character prototypes is, therefore, a given. This paper reconstructs the shaping of the fictional characters in Ukrainian literature at the turn of the 21st century—from the characters of Ukrainian modernism,“Homo Sovieticus” and the underground up to the present day. The shaping of Ukrainian fictional characters during this time was not easy. With the arrival of Ukrainian postmodernism, the characters became uncertain and were forced into endless searching with no real hopes for the future. The main protagonists of the current Ukrainian novels have changed: they look to the past to assess and understand the world they live in but are perhaps still searching and have to follow a path of self-discovery to be able to finally stop and fully understand their identity.

- Summary/Abstract:The author of the paper introduces several basic terms from the sphere of orthography and punctuation and reflects their mutual relationship in Czech and Russian. In the paper the author mentions some of their definitions that are not always unambiguous, comments on them and compare to each other, which includes comparing between languages. Greater attention is paid to punctuation and punctuation and other marks as well as to other tendencies and problematic phenomena that are not captured in codification manuals. He points out the different understanding of punctuation in Czech and Russian. There are also presented some terms and definitions from the typography sphere, that has close relationship with orthography and punctuation. However, typography and the visual side of the text is in the background among linguists, although the differences (especially in practice) between the languages are significant and there is the high level of interference between them. Based on some sameness between orthography and typography there is established a new term, typographic-orthographic phenomenon, which should connect the spheres of orthography, punctuation and typography.

- Summary/Abstract:Dream and dreaming belong to the components of works written by Fyodor Mikhailowich Dostoyevsky (1821-1881) which have been remained a long time underrated. In the present paper the author deals with a motif of a dream that appears, except for another motifs, for instance the motif of an accidental family, four elements, suicide or a tortured horse, in Dostoyevsky’s Diary of a Writer. The author of the study tries to answer a question how the motif of a dream in Dostoyevsky’s works evolves, characterizes its place in the Diary of a Writer and shows on other relations in which are dreams from the Diary of a Writer with Dostoyevsky’s works published before, during and after his Diary of a Writer.

- Summary/Abstract:The city is one of the main topics of the modern reality, and literature is not an exception. While studying the city in literature, researchers pay their attention to anatomy, physiology and psychology of the city, as well as its chronotope etc. We tried to show some of these aspects basing on Republic of Shkid by G. Belykh and L. Panteleev. After some basic facts about the book and its authors there follows the description of Petrograd in the book. The dominant of the city space here is the school itself and surrounding streets. From the authors’ point of view there is some connection between the school, its pupils and the city so that they can influence each other. The city for them is predominantly the school, and the main city monuments are not so attractive for them. It is very important that even if the atmosphere of the epoch is so negative, the authors see the city in happy colours.
