Summary/Abstract: The name ‘Arctic’ comes from the Greek arktos, meaning ‘bear’; ancient people marked the north based on the position of the Great Bear constellation. Today, the Arctic is increasingly portrayed as a region, which lies in the ‘shadow’ of the bear. This of course refers to Russia, which has been steadily building up its military capabilities in the High North and investing in the development of the Northern Sea Route (NSR) and the extraction of Arctic resources. It also lays the most far‑reaching claims to the continental shelf around the North Pole.
