Summary/Abstract: Angela Merkel’s career was a phenomenon on the German political scene. At the turn of the twentieth and twenty‑first centuries, it was unimaginable that a woman from Eastern Germany, an academic, though without a degree in law, relatively young, childless, remarried, could lead a government on behalf of the Christian Democrats and, in addition, hold this position for the next 16 years.
