Summary/Abstract: The first Polish translation of Edgar Allan Poe’s "Eureka. A Prose Poem" – a cosmological treatise combining references to astronomy, physics and mathematics with concepts coined by the author by means of intuition, metaphysically-inclined deliberations and a literary discourse serving an aesthetic function. The Polish text is equipped with critical apparatus and accompanied by an informative translator’s introduction and chapters by the editors, introducing the readers to the history of "Eureka’s" creation process and its literary, literary studies and translative reception in Poland.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper is a brief overview of the circumstances under which Edgar Allan Poe presented his cosmological “poem” to the public, the early reception of its printed text, as well as links connecting Eureka with some of Poe’s tales. Since the main point of the tract is a theory of the expanding and contracting universe, which implies a recurrent catastrophe, such tales as, e.g., "The Colloquy of Monos and Una" and "The Conversation of Eiros and Charmion", and "The Power of Words" anticipate the conclusion formulated in the idiom of science. Even Poe’s most popular tale, The Fall of the House of Usher seems to be based on a reduction of two to one and then to nothing, later to be found in Eureka. In the final part of the essay, some key examples of the renewed interest in Poe’s work in the 20th century, which either address the motif of catastrophe or refer directly to the writer’s last publication, are mentioned to demonstrate that "Eureka" did not attract much critical attention at that time.

- Summary/Abstract:The main goal of the article is to present the fi rst Polish translation of Edgar Allan Poe’s "Eureka", by Marian Polak-Chlabicz, and to show it in the context of other Polish translations of the author’s works and their reception. Although the first Polish-language references to "Eureka" had appeared in the 19th century (along with translations of Poe’s works, which enjoyed great interest in Poland), "Eureka" was first published in parts in translation only in 2019–2021 in the journal Tekstualia. The article shows that the work’s Polish-language critical edition can give impetus to the full Polish reception of the writer’s work, while providing an important link in his literary legacy. Poe remains the author of very widely read works among lovers of popular literature and among researchers and twentieth-century Polish authors of belles-lettres. Of the latter, Stefan Grabiński, Bolesław Leśmian, Witold Gombrowicz and Stanisław Lem are artists who reflect in individual ways and through original means of artistic expression on the nature of all things. The article’s author proves that in the context of the full translation of Poe’s Eureka one can legitimately inquire into similarities, differences, specificity and functions of these writers’ literary cosmographies.
