Summary/Abstract: The publication is intended for teachers of Czech as a foreign/second language, especially for novices or those ask questions about more effective teaching. The authors aim to offer a comprehensive and practical guide to approaching to Czech as a foreign/second language. First, they explain the difference between mother tongue, foreign language and second language, which is the key to why each of them should be approached differently in teaching. Second, they outline the rationale for teaching as it is anchored in curriculum documents and show its relevance to the lesson plans and implementation of teaching. Third, they reflect on practical aspects of language teaching, such as the choice of mediating language, the use of linguistic terminology and the selection of an appropriate method. Above all they describe specifically how to develop the different components of communicative competence, e.g., to practise correct pronunciation, to develop vocabulary, how and in what order to explain specific linguistic phenomena or work with sociolinguistic and pragmatic competence. Last but not least, the authors present their own findings on the development of speech skills, i.e., they define the goals to be met as well as conditions and methods for their achievement. The book also includes a pack of teaching activities that are related to the Czech it UP textbook series. The authors show how the selected teaching methods can be applied to build communicative competence and develop speaking skills.
