Summary/Abstract: The monograph presents a study of the consumption behaviour of Bulgarian households for the period 2000 – 2022 using HBS data. It aims to reveal the economic characteristics of household consumption, incl. its overall and internal dynamics, the distribution of expenditures among the various groups of goods and services, as well as the influence of the main factors behind it with an emphasis on long-run developments. To achieve this the book starts with a detailed review of the existing theoretical and empirical literature and then proceeds to introduce a system of indicators to describe consumption behaviour. After that, the role of consumption in the Bulgarian economy is studied and its dynamics and structure during the period are carefully described. This analysis uses a large amount of statistical data and makes many comparisons with other EU economies. The results highlight the leading role of consumption among the demand components in the Bulgarian economy as well as its slightly faster growth compared to most other member countries, which contributes to the country’s convergence to the average EU levels. In line with the growth of income, we also see an internal restructuring of consumption towards higher value-added goods and services. The results also indicate the influence of demographic changes on consumption dynamics, with the falling share of larger households and the rising share of older households having a negative impact on the demand of some high value-added products. Considering these results, some prospects for the growth of the Bulgarian economy are outlined.
