Summary/Abstract: This monograph, prepared by numerous authors, shows the figure of Karol Irzykowski in the interwar period, presenting the attitude of the critic towards the Young Poland movement and his interactions with the avant-garde. The articles synthetize Irzykowski’s reflections on the sensual representation of experience, pointing to his intellectual activity in the field of theatre and cinema. The authors address Irzykowski’s discussions with Marxism, his polemics critical of the Jews (the circle of “Wiadomości Literackie”), his attitude to the Polish Academy of Literature. The last bloc of texts is devoted to a unique clercism of the writer and the solitude resulting from it, shown against the background of other models of clercism in the context of literary geography and Irzykowski's accusations of anti-Semitism.

  • Summary/Abstract:In the years 1919–1922 Karol Irzykowski cooperated with three literary magazines: “Skamander”, “Ponowa” and “Krokwie”. As a literary critic, he tried not only to get to know new poetic movements, but also to influence them. He believed that they were a continuation of avant-garde ideas and pre-war experiments in which he took part. Therefore, he used the common name of “The Young Poland” for the competing environments of “Skamander” and “Ponowa” and demanded from everyone an artistic awareness expressed primarily in programs. Irzykowski’s reaction to Skamandrites reluctant to formulate such programs was his famous article “Programophobia”; in “Ponowa” he appreciated programming tendencies, but had many objections to the practice of poets associated with it. Despite being a member of the editorial committees of both journals, he expressed reservations about them, which, in turn, provoked their authors to ironic reactions. The cooperation between Irzykowski and the magazine “Krokwie” looked different, promoting the direction created in pre-war Lviv – constructionalism. He hoped that “Krokwie” would allow him to develop his own works, which was not possible in “Skamander” or in “Ponowa”.

  • Summary/Abstract:The paper aims at the analysis of selected critical statements Karol Irzykowski made about Stanisław Przybyszewski, a pivotal figure in the Young Poland’s movement at the turn of the twentieth century. Against the background of other changes that occurred in the 1920s in Irzykowski’s approach to literary figures he formerly criticized, one can observe Irzykowski assumes a lenient attitude towards Przybyszewski that results from recognition of essential similarities between their artistic credos dating back twenty-five years and a feeling of generational affinity in terms of experiencing emotions such as loneliness, disappointment, and anxiety. Irzykowski recognises Przybyszewski’s literary straightforwardness as well as the authenticity of his memoirs and his play "Mściciel" [The Avenger], and explores his older colleague’s art and critical comments made while taking down facts about the most recent history of Polish literature.

  • Summary/Abstract:This essay offers an analysis of the rhetoric of the dispute between Irzykowski and Witkacy that takes into account both artists’ strong statements of opinions as an indication of their hidden recurring resentments. In the essay, the dispute is interpreted as a duel between two unrecognised intellectuals accusing each other of anachronisms and honouring themselves with a label of a precursor. What is more, the author of the essay points out how the nature of this psychomachy-like dispute manifests itself with a constant violation of by and large accepted ethical norms of an artistic dispute of which the two were eager proponents.

  • Summary/Abstract:The article shows how the attitude of Julian Przyboś to Karol Irzykowski developed and evolved. As a young poet of the Cracow avant-garde, Przyboś perceived Irzykowski as a recognized critic and a writer of great authority. In his views, he particularly valued the critical attitude towards the Young Poland movement, the rejection of derivativeness, and respect for the originality of literary achievements. The dispute with the outstanding critic, who accurately pointed to the weaknesses of avant-garde aesthetic ideas, was an opportunity for Przyboś to clarify and summarize his own views, different from Irzykowski’s and Peiper’s. The disputes between Karol Irzykowski and Julian Przyboś reflected ideas clashing in the interwar period and constituted an essential element of literary life.

  • Summary/Abstract:From Irzykowski’s theatrical reviews emerges a special image of their author – it is a man faithful to literature, drama as a literary work, and especially its mental content. This faithfulness gives a special ethical value to his statements about theatre. Irzykowski is able to stand against the general reviewers in defense of the playwrights criticised by them wrongly (as he believes); some other time he is capable of responding viciously and hurling abuse at an author who speaks ill about his profession. He can also criticize the most famous theatre director of that time – Leon Schiller. In the era of domination of the so-called reformers of the theatre, whose writings he knows, his approach to theatre from the perspective of a dramatic work gives his reviews a special value of other modernity.

  • Summary/Abstract:The chapter examines texts of a film critic Andrzej Włast published in the “Ekran i Scena” magazine and a book by Karol Irzykowski, whose "The Tenth Muse: Aesthetic Aspects of Cinema" (1924) is the first theoretical study exploring the cinema as art in the Polish language. Both Włast and Irzykowski addressed issues of film movement and montage, film genres, stardom, and others, analyzing contemporary film production in Europe and the USA. It is interesting to follow parallels and differences in points of view of the two critics and writers to show the early stage of film theory in Poland and the ways of discussing the language of cinema, its status as an art form and as part of popular culture.

  • Summary/Abstract:The article presents Karol Irzykowski’s film theory from the perspective of a viewer and participant of the newly emerging visual culture. Until now scholars have only treated Irzykowski as a pioneer of Polish film theory, overlooking his role as a regular at film screenings as well as an active reviewer of the cinematic repertory of his day. Szulik draws on Irzykowski’s reviews in “Wiadomości Literackie” (1924–1925) in order to show that his theory was rooted in his participation in and reflection on popular culture.

  • Summary/Abstract:This article synthesises information scattered in memoirs and academic texts: on Karol Irzykowski’s role in the press dispute of 1918–1929 over the drafts and statutes of institutions which were to organise literary life and protect the professional interests of writers (Polish Academy of Literature, Literary Chamber), and also on his work at the Polish Academy of Literature, which existed in the years 1933–1939. This information reveals Irzykowski’s dynamically changing views on the Academy, the drafts of which he reviewed, the statutes of which he first co-wrote and then rejected, and the establishment of the Academy into existence – which he received with resignation, but nevertheless accepted his own appointment to it. In the end, Irzykowski turned out to be the most committed, and at the same time the least respected by other academics, member of the institution.

  • Summary/Abstract:The article presents three threads of the reception of Irzykowski’s works in Lviv in the 1930s concerning: the dispute on the role of intellectuals, the accusations of anti-Semitism, and Irzykowski’s theory of cinema. The cultural and literary environment of interwar Lviv did not accept Irzykowski’s intellectual indefiniteness and political independence. Irzykowski himself treated politics as an aesthetic rather than social space, which met with resistance of various circles.

  • Summary/Abstract:The article analyzes complex relations between Karol Irzykowski (1874–1944) and Jan Emil Skiwski (1894–1956). Skiwski was one of the most outstanding literary critics in prewar Poland and also one of the most active and demanding polemists of Irzykowski. Skiwski described himself as clerc i.e. independent intellectual, but as his polemics proved he understood intellectual independency quite differently than Irzykowski did. By his witty and often malicious concepts Skiwski also forced Irzykowski to explain his intellectual positions. Their quarrel had quite unexpected outcome: in the name of independency Skiwski collaborated with Germans during the Second World War and he also saluted Irzykowski after his death in 1944 in a collaborationist newspaper “Przełom”.

  • Summary/Abstract:The aim of the article is to characterize the situation of Karol Irzykowski in the interwar period and his paradoxical – because it took place in the circumstances of the critic’s extraordinary activity – loneliness. The frustration and bitterness of the critic, which finds diary documentation, is shown as the result of social and professional disappointments (the backstage of parting with literary magazines, the way Irzykowski functioned at PAL, failures on the literary awards market, the unsatisfactory work of a parliamentary stenographer). The dialectic of isolation and engagement is presented as a consequence of 1) Irzykowski’s personality traits, 2) the concept of literary criticism, based on the postulate of merciless unmasking of mental prejudices and developed by him already in the Young Poland period, 3) the necessary response to the epistemological and ethical foundations of the clerc’s worldview.
