Summary/Abstract: Before you is a collection of texts "Gender and Violence in the Balkans", which presents a comprehensive analysis of gender-based violence and the wider impact of gender issues in the society of the Balkans. The collection is the result of the work and thinking of the participants of the "Gender and Violence" Winter School, who developed their texts with the mentoring support of their professors. This collection not only documents the key insights that shaped the Winter School program, but also includes discussions during it, and deepens the understanding of the complex connections between gender, gender identities, and the various forms of violence that society reproduces and tolerates. Through different approaches and perspectives, authors explore how gender manifests itself in different spheres of social life - from public spheres such as law and politics, through education, science, culture and art, to deeply personal and intimate aspects of life. The papers in this collection try to shed light on how gender, as a construct, affects various aspects of life and how violence, especially directed against women, shapes the socio-political and cultural reality of the Balkan region.

- Summary/Abstract:In the countries of the Western Balkans, dominant norms of gender roles and rigid patterns of patriarchal male identity continue to dictate men's behaviors, perceptions and relationships towards women and other members of the community, often teaching them that being a "real man" means being the support and protector of the family and community from an early age. Considering the alarming rates of violence against women around the world, this scientific paper investigates whether social expectations in the form of traditional norms of masculinity influence the perpetration of violence against women in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Methodologically, a questionnaire was used as a quantitative research method, while two models of multiple regression analysis were used in the analysis of the collected data. Based on empirical results, it was discovered that many norms of masculinity are widely represented among BiH men, as well as that there is a statistically significant and undeniable influence of the hegemonic concept of norms of masculinity on various forms of violence against women, including psychological and economic violence. The overall contributions of this research are manifold and are reflected both in the enrichment of theory and the empirical part through a deeper understanding of the impact of masculinity norms on various types of violence against women, as well as in giving recommendations for a comprehensive approach focused on the promotion of gender-aware prevention strategies and interventions aimed at reducing violence against women and creating a more inclusive society based on respect for gender equality.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper investigates the phenomenon of femicide as the most extreme form of gender-based violence against women, emphasizing its deep roots in the structural injustices of society. Statistics indicate alarming statistics of murders of women around the world, confirming the widespread presence of violence against women that cannot be ignored. The paper analyzes the need for a more precise definition of femicide in legislation, highlighting the shortcomings of current approaches. Special attention was paid to the recent change in the Criminal Code in the Republic of Croatia, which introduced femicide as a separate criminal offense, prompting lively public discussions. The paper questions whether such a change could improve gender equality or is it unnecessary and discriminatory. Furthermore, the analysis of judicial practice in Croatia in relation to cases of femicide provides an insight into the way in which the judicial system deals with this serious form of violence against women. The paper highlights the responsibility of the state in ensuring justice and protecting the rights of its citizens, emphasizing that the punishment comes too late when the crime has already been committed, and therefore it is necessary to act on the prevention of gender-based violence, creating an environment in which women are safe and live without fear.

- Summary/Abstract:Defining a woman as everything that a man is not, that is, the definition of a woman as "other", puts all her desires, needs and decisions, including those concerning her sexuality, in the background in relation to a man. The entrenchment of sexism and misogyny in society leads us to consider female sexuality permissible only in certain contexts, within romantic relationships, marriage or relationships that must include a component of love. Yet these rules and contexts do not apply to men. How do sexism and misogyny affect keeping women in a subordinate position through the control of their sexuality? Are a woman's sexual desires a true product of her needs or just a veiled influence of patriarchy or a need to defy it? The goal of this paper is precisely the presentation and discussion of the above-mentioned issues through an interdisciplinary perspective on the topic.

- Summary/Abstract:In this paper, we try to reexamine the relationship between feminist theory and education, and how, why, and how the relationship between them can still be shaped. Starting from the historical development of this relationship - as education for feminism and feminism in education, and further through a critical review of the existing literature on feminist research conducted in an educational context, we will search for productive connections between the supporting principles of feminist pedagogy and the key tendencies of contemporary pedagogy more broadly, and try to indicate what else it can actually mean to "learn feminism" in a way that will truly contribute to the development of both feminism and education. Our conclusions indicate that it is necessary to revive the feminist principles of equality, critical thinking, inclusivity, transformativeness, empowerment and intersectionality in all aspects of the educational process, starting from the creation of the program, through the creation of the atmosphere of the educational context and up to the evaluation model. Thus, feminist principles actively live in the educational system as a kind of "heterotopia" with the potential to spread to society as a whole, while feminist principles support the transformative potential of education, which is recognized today as a key educational value.
