Summary/Abstract: Every action we take, every used phone we throw away, every can of soda we put in the wrong place will affect the planet and, subsequently, the lives of future generations. When we have so much power to ruin the world, we should not be allowed to not know how we could also save it. The present book, although it cannot put together all the available information, tries to gather the minimum of it, so that it can make us understand how much harmwe, as human beings, have brought to our planet, why we should stop doing it and what we should do in order to make things better. The book is a collection of articles that have one thing in common: the protection of the environment, which they approach from different perspectives.

- Summary/Abstract:Sustainable development is one of the main catch phrases of our century. The term was coined in 1987, by the Bruntland Commission, part of the United Nations Commission on Environment and Development. Under the sustainable development approach, the emphasis is upon integrating environmental concerns with the social and economic. Experts suggest that the three main pillars of sustainable development are world economic, social, and environmental policy. Despite the many areas affected by sustainable development the main area of consideration concerns economic development and the environment. For sustainable development to be a feasible and practical approach, short and long term actions need to be taken by many players. Countries, regional and local authorities, scientific institutions, non -governmental organizations and especially businesses must work together at the national and international level. The main goal of this paper is to present the main aspects of sustainable development in the Balkans region through a comparative analysis of Macedonia and Croatia. These countries are selected due to the fact that they are both countries aspiring to join the European Union. The paper includes an analysis of the sustainable development framework of these counties in an attempt to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each country regarding their sustainable development policies and present a framework of good sustainable development practices for the region.

- Summary/Abstract:Nowadays we hear more and more about climate change, CO2 emissions, environmental protection and sustainability mostly in the media. But what can we do to avoid the consequences? Is it really our problem or a political scandal? These questions should be made clear for everyone since individual commitment is one of the most important requirements on our way to sustainable consumption and sustainable development. In the next chapter the challenges of sustainable consumption will be highlighted and an environmental management tool introduced, that can be a driver of sustainable consumption and production. Green procurement is one of the management tools that is to be used to reach sustainable consumption patterns, further innovation and give a market to ecotechnologies. Green procurement means that procurers take environmental issues into account when buying goods or services. The goal is to reduce the impact of procurement on the environment (CO2 emissions, toxic material, amount of waste etc) and human health. Buying green is the most active and most demonstrative way of environmental protection, and it is a tool that every individual, public authority and private company can use in order to cooperate in environmental protection and tackling climate change.

- Summary/Abstract:The Niger Delta region is one of the most important wetland and coastal marine ecosystems in the world. The region is endowed with massive oil deposits, vast agricultural land, raw materials, excellent fisheries and extensive forest. The location of the region in the coast, crude oil exploitation and rapid urbanization and the fragile nature of their ecosystem make the region highly susceptible to global environmental change (GEC). Today, the region is characterized by perennial flooding, high temperature, salt water intrusion and sea level rise and the magnitude and intensity of which have been on the increase in recent time. In the last decades, development experts and policy makers have engaged in many debates about the region‟s human development dilemma, questioning why abundant human and natural resources have had so little impact on poverty and what path leads towards sustainable human development in the region. These questions, among others, constitute the driving force for this paper. The goal of this paper is to explore the pathways for sustainable development under global environmental changes in the Niger - Delta region of Nigeria. The study covers two states (Ondo and Delta state) out of the nine states in the region. The study utilizes both primary and secondary data and was collected with the use of questionnaire and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). The paper among other things indicated that changing environmental conditions contributes to poverty in the region through loss of livelihoods, loss of biodiversity and destruction of lives and property. The paper also reveals high vulnerability of the people to these environmental changes and therefore calls for awareness creation and development of community based adaptation in local communities to increase the resilience of local communities to these changes.
