Summary/Abstract: Sustainable development is one of the main catch phrases of our century. The term was coined in 1987, by the Bruntland Commission, part of the United Nations Commission on Environment and Development. Under the sustainable development approach, the emphasis is upon integrating environmental concerns with the social and economic. Experts suggest that the three main pillars of sustainable development are world economic, social, and environmental policy. Despite the many areas affected by sustainable development the main area of consideration concerns economic development and the environment. For sustainable development to be a feasible and practical approach, short and long term actions need to be taken by many players. Countries, regional and local authorities, scientific institutions, non -governmental organizations and especially businesses must work together at the national and international level. The main goal of this paper is to present the main aspects of sustainable development in the Balkans region through a comparative analysis of Macedonia and Croatia. These countries are selected due to the fact that they are both countries aspiring to join the European Union. The paper includes an analysis of the sustainable development framework of these counties in an attempt to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each country regarding their sustainable development policies and present a framework of good sustainable development practices for the region.
