Summary/Abstract: Through the analysis of contemporary works of fiction, the papers published in these proceedings aim to shine light on the representation and/or construction of the Bosniak identity. Furthermore, as a result of the academic conference that preceded the publishing of these papers, these proceedings represent a collection of works which passed through the scrutiny of the Bosniak academic community, and thus presents an incumbent contribution to the fields of literary studies, sociology, contemporary history and cultural studies.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper is a survey of the stages of Bosniak literary development, along with the relationship between the most significant poetic phenomena of the given time periods and the question of Bosniak identity. As it will be seen, a certain identity image is mirrored in a literary work while, at the same time, the literary work itself tries to develop new identities in its recipients. Furthermore, close attention is directed towards intertextual relations between newer literature and tradition, which is one of the models of cultural memory that helps building literary identity. Through the very same vision of identity, Bosniak literature bears witness to the fact that the history of a national literature can also function as a history of literary taste or a history of searching to understand trauma. Every literary historian makes a choice whether to record a history of change in understanding and experiencing literary aesthetics or to record a history of pain, fear and trauma, as literature offers both.

- Summary/Abstract:Literary creation in Bosnia-Herzegovina is very complex. Viewed as a whole and throughout its historical duration, it has not been realized within the framework of one nation or one ethno-national community, nor within only one language or only one alphabet, nor within the framework of only one cultural-civilizational circle. This fact and this kind of literary-historical and cultural-historical reality gives the basis from which it is now possible to talk about a unique, singular literature of Bosnia-Herzegovina, or Bosnian-Herzegovinian literature, and also about parallel, plural literatures of Bosnia- Herzegovina – Bosniak as well as Croat and Serbian literatures in Bosnia-Herzegovina, together with the literary traditions of Bosnian-Herzegovinian minority communities, such as the Jewish community and others. Also, it is possible to speak about a phenomenon that should – given its own, internal historical-developmental dynamics and its literary-developmental principles and relationships in general – probably be named the Bosnian-Herzegovinian interliterary community. Related concerns are necessarily reflected in the definition of Bosnian literary studies and in particular in the definition of cultural Bosnian literary studies. Bosnian literary studies, and especially cultural Bosnian literary studies, can not, in fact, be defined using the principle of one language – one literature – one nation – one culture, nor in the framework of a single state, because this principle does not correspond to the historical reality of the literary creation nor to what is the contemporary reality of literary practice in Bosnia-Herzegovina. That is why, in understanding the phenomenon of literary creativity in Bosnia-Herzegovina, as well in defining both Bosnian literary studies and cultural Bosnian literary studies, primarily the theoretical concepts of interliterariness as well as closely related concepts of interculturality occur as potential solutions, as – both of them – have their essential meaning and full realization in the cases of both literary and culturally complex phenomena like literature in Bosnia-Herzegovina in general, as well as Bosniak literature in particular.

- Summary/Abstract:Bosniak literature in Ottoman period testifies to the case of how socio historical circumstances, which¸determined existence of Bosniaks as nation during the period of more than four centuries, did not cause¸cultural de-identification or ethnic assimilation of islamicized Slavs into the Orient. The sense of Slavic ethnicity remained present during the entire rule of Ottoman empire, which created and maintained¸specific, indigenous, Slavic-Islamic identity of Bosnian Muslims – Bosniaks.¸However, it should be emphasized that the affirmation process of the Slavic component of Bosniak¸identity in Ottoman period was not the result of organized strategy or prepared national or cultural¸program, but more instinctive, affective reaction to the socio-historical circumstances of national¸survival. Concrete activities in reference to the aformentioned process, started at the time of Austro-¸Hungarian occupation with Mehmed-beg Kapetanovic Ljubusak who was the first amongst Bosniak¸authors to separate ethnic and religious identity.

- Summary/Abstract:The topic of Franciscanism in literature is not reserved solely for Ivo Andric (although ‘Andric’s Franciscans’ have been extensively written about within literary criticism), nor is it reserved for Croatian literature in general. This work, from imagological prospective, offers the reading of fifteen texts from modern Bosniak literature that vary in genre and which remember Bosnian Franciscans – historical personalities (Anđeo Zvizdović, Matija Divković, Juraj Dragišić, Ivan Frano Jukić, Grgo Martić, Matheus Bartl (Mato Banjalučanin), Miroslav (Tomislav) Filipović / Majstorović, Ljubo Hrgić, Ivo Marković), but which also offer an image of Bosnian Franciscanism, in Bosniak visure. It has been shown that the ideas and images of Bosnian Franciscans in poems, short-stories, novels and dramas of Bosniak literature are mainly positive, but even when they’re not – they are understandable and expected if one bears in mind the questions that are the subject of imagological consideration of the text: WHO, TO WHOM, WHEN and HOW is one speaking. The work concludes that between several views of the ethnic (cultural) identity being realized (also) in literature (from Karahasan’s garden to Lovrenović’s rainbow colours to Spahić’s “poetry of kaleidoscope”) it is not impossible to talk about all of them within one text i.e. about Bosniak literature at the same time and that Bosniak authors too are meritorious for the symbolical imaginarium of Franciscanism within the identification fields of Bosnian-Herzegovinian literature.

- Summary/Abstract:Although the composite structure of literature in Bosnia and Herzegovina had developed under rather specific social, cultural and historical circumstances, only, and on rare occasions in the past, some authors from these parts wrtote their works in exile (Habiba Rizvanbegović-Stočević, Arif-beg Rizvanbegović), but the separation from a homeland was the topic that some of its prominent writers from all its constituent segments came back to from time to time (Šantić, Andrić, Šop, La Bohoreta, etc.). It was only during the horrible war events towards the end of 20th century, which had forced not only hundreds of thousands of people to leave their native soil, but also inspired diverse forms of literary activities to emerge in exile. Their fundamental defining element was the attempt of securing and preserving ethnic, cultural and any other form of identity in the new surroundings. The paper tries to find some answers to the basic question posed in relation to a determination of literature in/and from Bosnia and Herzegovina, more specifically in view of its Bosniak component, which has been expresed in the published collections of poetry and short stories, rarely in plays, and in the majority of cases, in novel forms – from Norway, Denmark and USA, as well as some other parts of contemporary world. It points out to the situation in the immediate neighbourhood, nowadays largely referred to as the ‘region’, where some authors have continued to write their works, although they remained deeply connected to the language, culture, custioms and identity of the ethnic background they had come from, despite the fact that, in the meantime, they became citizens of the countries of admission. They all have continued to add a characteristic exile expression to the literary output in these new homelands. A rather specific issue deals with the concurrent belonging to literatures those Bosniak authors contributed to with their works, irrespective if their books had been published originally in the languages of these places, or in their mother Bosnian tongue. The works of Bekim Sejranović, Alen Mešković and Ismet Prcić have been analysed in the paper, together with some other names, as the possible examples of either proving or disapproving the initial hypothesis on the identity duality in the Bosniak or any other literature(s) for that matter.

- Summary/Abstract:At this significant moment in time ‒ the shift of two empires in which takes place the dramatic change in social and cultural paradigm and culture and civilization model, Edhem Mulabdić in his novel “Zeleno busenje“ shapes the distinctive imaginative constructions that reflect the ambivalent attitude of his narrative towards the occupation as a historic act and Austro-Hungarian colonization as a norm of the new age. At the time of the first contact with the Austro-Hungarians, narrative intentionally forms stereotypical ideas of the Bosniak community, which unconditionally accepts and adopts the cultural and historical value of the new time, and already in the next moment, on the basis of the enlightenment ideology, builds a liberating vision of the future of the nation.

- Summary/Abstract:Narratives of Bosniak female authors from the early twentieth century evidently contain a prominent theme of the construction of modern identity, which is in line with changes encouraged by the Europeanization of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Extratextual circumstances influenced significantly the formation of the world of fiction, which is again created with the intention of transforming readers’ world view. In this context, the narratives of Bosniak female authors – primarily of Nafija Sarajlić, the first female prose writer, and Bisera Alikadić, the first female novelist in Bosniak literary practice – are particularly interesting. The paper analyzes the strategies of confirming one’s own identity that are taken by the protagonists in the world of fiction, as well as the authors’ strategies in their positioning in the earlier patriarchal, man-centered system.

- Summary/Abstract:This paper analyzes the unpublished overview of Bosniak literature written by Enver Čolaković. Written during the time of the Independent State of Croatia (NDH) within the project entitled “Croatian Muslim Monographs”, this study, content wise, had to adhere to the rigid national-ideological framework of the cultural policy of that time. However, the author, insisting on his Bogomil roots, Bosnianhood and Bosnian identity of the Bosniak literature managed to achieve, to the extent it was possible, a counterbalance to the nominal Croatianhood and the officially promoted “Croatian-Muslim literary canon”. The quality of his work can be seen in the fact that Čolaković wrote not only literary-historical overview of the Bosniak literature, but also provided its general periodization, and established, according to his personal ideas and literary-esthetic predilection, anthological-chrestomathic order of writers and works of Bosniak literature.

- Summary/Abstract:Analytical and interpretive objective of analysis of the autobiographical discourse of Meša Selimovic Memories (1976) is to examine the way the work represents the subjective and collective experience of liminal or hybrid identity and culture of Bosniaks. Theoretical and critical starting point for the work are the views and terms which are developed by the postcolonial critics Edward W. Said, Homi Bhabha and Jan Assmann, German scientist who has studied the cultural memory. These theorists with their theoretical models have focused on sub-cultures and parts of the world, interpreting the discursive construction of the colonial countries of the Orient and the Third World. The work aims to offer a reading of Selimovic’s autobiographical discourse through the prism of concepts of postcolonial criticism and cultural studies as a narrative that in the construction of identity of Bosniaks first adopts colonial stereotypes, participating in the creation and adoption of orientalist images and stereotypes about the Bosniaks, then affirms the diversity and variety of Bosniaks culture, moving the former margins to the position of equal center whose voice becomes one of many that we hear in literature and culture.

- Summary/Abstract:The aim of this paper is to deconstruct, from feminist viewpoint, masculine centrality and to enlighten the position of a woman in Mak Dizdar’s collection of poems, Stone Sleeper. The awaken voices of Bosnian sleepers are male. The collection comprises poems that in different ways relate to reality, dreams and death of husbands, fathers and sons, who are associated with the stećak stones, and therefore are enliven as the voices of carvers, deacons, and the “owners” of stećak stones”, while a woman is the invisible historical subject. Neither traditional, essentialisticly postulated criticism nor recent poststructuralist and deconstructive oriented readings have paid attention to this aspect of Dizdar’s poetry.

- Summary/Abstract:From the perspective of modern literary theory, the development of literary criticism in Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1945 on is characterized by constant balancing between positivism and impressionism, the interrelationship between academic and political discourse and amateurish use of theoretical terminology. Literary criticism in Bosnia and Herzegovina did not reach the level of postmodern hybridity until the post-war period. The critical approaches to the works of Muhsin Rizvić and his personality can, with some necessary simplification, be positioned between two opposite reception poles: the negative critical pole (Kazaz, Ibrahimović), which takes the position of radical poststructuralist revisionism of literary history, on the one side, and the positive critical pole (Maglajlić, Džanko), which glorifies Rizvić’s works and the role it had at the time when it was written, on the other. There is also a third critical pole, whose strategy can be termed as affirmative recycling. The middle road, outside of the apologetic or leveling discourse proved to be the most appropriate to the present situation which in its statement requires the right to diversity.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper deals with the genesis of shaping and reshaping the Bosniak cultural identity, through all historical misfortune and changes. In novelistic cycle Zamjene and Krivice, as well as the novel CrnoTurci, Husein Bašić writes out the historical doom of Sandžak Bosniaks and beyond, in the area of Balkan demarcation and the area of new lords, after Ottoman withdrawal. Bosniaks face the consequences of imposed “Turkish guilt” - persecution, robbery, arson and murders. The confusion, fear and disorientation led to mass emigration and further even occasional mass crimes and suffering, especially during the World War II, which preceded the genocide in Bosnia at the end of the 20th century. Searching for the causes and consequences of the tragic events, the author writes individual and collective destinies in creating narrative characters, also showing the drama of identity: identity crisis, trauma identity, identity replacement and division,

- Summary/Abstract:The paper intends to analyze how spatial figures participate in the representation of Bosniak and Bosnian-Herzegovinian cultural identity in two novels of different poetic models. The research will include Skender Kulenović’s ‘Ponornica’ (1977) as a modern polyphonic novel, as well as a postmodern novel ‘Berlinski nepoznati prolaznik’ (1998) by Irfan Horozović, a novel with fluid structure related to the exile experience and elements of testimonial literature. These novels offer an insight to the impact of historical trauma (the Austro-Hungarian theme in the first novel and the last war in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the second novel) to a process of literary identity (identities) formation. For this purpose it will primarly be important to analyze the spatial figure of subterranean river and the city as a literary topos. The dominance of particular spatial figure, as well as their representation, is conditioned by poetic models, which results in different uses of spatial figures of city, urban area or bazaar and even a different topographies of nature.

- Summary/Abstract:This paper will research into the questions of identity and the ways in which Zlatko Topčić answers to them in his novels. First thing to notice is a biographical author who in his autopoeticism choses the identity of a historical and moral witness, and the next one is the series of identity questions posed by the texts of the novels. Starting from the individual trauma, through memory and testimony, Topčić’s novels question the identity of the marginalized victims and theirtestimonies through letters and writings, as well as the identity of the differently different others within the usual order of identity. These are novels in which the “I – witness“ through the artistic creation of traumatic memories becomes one of the creators of the collective memory.

- Summary/Abstract:Recognizable in the literary world as an exceptionally lyric author, Hadžem Hajdarević has published two prose works by 2016 – a collection of short stories Plastic Surgery Clinic and a novel Where have you been these years. Hajdarević’s stories represent an attempt at eclectic unification of the modernist tradition and the post-modern narrative procedures. The typical theme of modern poetry – the intellectual and his internal world – is treated through self-referential inversion thanks to which the text takes over the role of “the protagonist“, while taking pleasure in the theoretically-inspired questioning of its own performances in a way that could be approximately defined by using the term concetto (a baroque figure that attempts to impress the reader by using the inventiveness of pictures, images and connections between objects and occurrences). Nevertheless, the author succeeds, by using double text coding, to establish communication with different profiles of readers. The consciousness of limitations of reception of this poetics has encouraged Hajdarević, whose public engagement has, in the meantime, intensified in the media and, indirectly, in politics, to focus more decisively on realistic prose and neo-realistic, mimetic writing in his debut novel. The novel is characterized by the imbalance of diegetic and lyricdiscursive layers of the novel, a result of powerful inertia of the lyrical approach in processing realistic content, relying on metaphoric-mimetic and symbolic transposition of the significant particularities, while the mimetic prose model, the author was forced to accept by the choice of the topic, requires, at least equal focus on traditional motivational (psycho-social) mechanisms of supportive elements of the narrative structure.

- Summary/Abstract:War as a limit situation represents a national split both in an ideological and a identitary sense. Literature in postwar countries is, accordingly, often a field in which the reality of war is not just being processed, but also where the identity of a nation is being (de)constructed. In the case of the Bosnian- Herzegovinian identity, which was in a crisis even decades before the war in the 1990’s, this construction (or deconstruction) is still happening in literature. In novels such as Sedam strahova (Seven fears) by Selvedin Avdic this kind of war background for constructing an identity takes on a kind of mythical dimension, trying to “explain” the genesis of negative postwar social phenomena such as war profiteering, opportunism and overall moral decadency.

- Summary/Abstract:Sara Sabri’s pseudonym is Sanela Karišik-Begovic, Sandzak/BH author. Books Šapućem ti kao Sara Sabri1 and Šapućem ti kao majka majci can be classified in the genre of self-help, because we can read the intent to influence the attitudes of the recipient. Therefore, Sara Sabri’s books are participants in the construction of identity of Bosniaks outside the very text. Books of Sara Sabri consist of short texts that appear to touch upon various topics. Texts can be characterized as a short meditation on the various phenomena in the society, but the most common topics are the role of women as mothers and wives and relations with a spouse. In accordance to the anti-essentialist concept of identity as a construction and to the feminist theory, in this work we critically analyze Sara Sabris’s texts in mentioned books, especially relying on the Lawrence Grossberg’s definition of text interpretiation in which the interpretation of the texts is understood as a struggle of people “not only to make out what the text means, but also to impute meaning as something that will connect with their lives, experiences, needs and preferences”.

- Summary/Abstract:The epic character Alija Đerzelez has transcended onto other forms of oral literature, the most recent instance of which comes from fieldwork conducted in Srebrenica by the ethnologists of the National Museum of Bosnia-Herzegovina at the beginning of 2009. Here Alija Đerzelez comes in the form of a 42-line long ballad, composed in the iambic pentameter. After an analysis of the existing variants, it has been confirmed that the poem was probably written in Herzegovina, and that the date of origin refers to a rather recent past (with the exception of Kurt’s variant published in his collection in 1902). The particularity of the last poem recorded lies in the fact that the massive and seemingly immortal myth about the invincible Đerzelez has come to an endpoint in this poem. The death of the hero of mythic proportions has been announced even in the only place where the belief in his immortality was alive – in a poem.

- Summary/Abstract:This paper discusses the role of oral epic singing, recitation, own memories and collective remembrance in the Bosniaks/ Bosnian and Herzegovinian oral literature on the example of the recorded text, Testimony of the epic singer Halil Bajgoric. The figures and places of memories are shown, and the ways of their re/production in the epic tradition. Analysis was made on processes and circumstances under which, from overall historical events on the Bosnia and Herzegovina territory, singers/ narrators recycled and processed the appropriate fragments and made them as the base for the construction of their own or group identity, while at the same time some other historical episodes became places of suppresion and oblivion. The paper engaged the relationship between memory and history, and certain attitudes about the past which are reviewed within the selected fragments of written Bajgoric’s texts/ interviews. It is tried to answer the questions about the border identity of the Bosniaks and Bosnian literature. It was shown how selected fragments of oral singing/ testimony (narration) are suitable material for critical analysis of gender positions in a specific social context, and that epic oral literature represents a nonle area for articulation aspects of personal/ collective identity: authenticity, multiplication, identity crisis, devial recognition, problems of the state borders, nation, power, questions about the body, sexuality, family.

- Summary/Abstract:Rarely inspiring book, Vedad Spahić’s: “Literature and Identity” presents us with determinants of the Bosniak identity, contained in the Bosniak and Bosnian literary narrative. Spahić’s kaleidoscopic display of literary narratives about Bosniak identity ranges from orientalist stereotypes of Islam, secularism and proletarian internationalism over nationalism, traumatic experiences of war destruction, victimization and self-victimization, to nomadism, globalization and the ontological and gnosiological relativism, which always raise the following questions: What do the Bosniaks know about themselves?; What should the Bosniaks do?; What may they hope for?; all of which can be summarized into a single question: Who are the Bosniaks? The fundamental question of every social collectivity, the question of identity, requires theoretical and categorical determination that Hegel placed in the second volume of his Logic. This categorical determination, which serves as our guideline, teaches about the “substance”, “essence” or “being”. The question of identity is a matter of “reflection-in-self “, an attitude towards self, not as a direct comparison but as a reflexive relationship. “Reflection in self” is a process of self-determination, but every determination does not constitute an identity. The very process of determination, or self-determination, is expressed as a narrative. Only essential definition allows identity: that which is the same in all different manifestations. Having identity means to be able to appear in different forms, but in a way that no form of appearance exhausts the nature of thing or its identity. Omnis determinatio est negatio. Every determination presupposes difference. We cannot talk about identity, without talking about (presupposing) difference. If we say that the Bosniaks are Muslims, then this determination assumes its difference, the non-Muslims: Christians, Jews. This difference (relation) between Muslims and non-Muslims must be overcome by the means of negation or mutual recognition. We interpret ourselves in relation to others, as others interpret us in relation to themselves. Only in this relation of identity and difference, i.e. by overcoming the difference, new forms of sociability as the basis or reason for existence of individual identity, are being established. Historical practice shows that religious, national and state determinants of Bosniaks, produce differences in relation to the Serbs and Croats, which cannot be overcome by mutual recognition at a higher level of sociability. The fundamental societal form that constitutes the Bosniak identity established by essential determinants, especially Islam which is a subject of nationalization attempts, is expressed as a pre-modern religious or confessional community unable to complete national and political emancipation of the Bosniaks. The relation between reality (identity of Bosnsiaks) and art can manifest itself in different forms. Essentially, art either represents reality of things – depicting phenomenon as it is, depicting it’s “surface”, or it succeeds in depicting the essence of things, by manifesting “that which is present in an absent”, thus bringing out the essence, or identity, of the reality it presents.

- Summary/Abstract:This paper examines the notion of identity from the perspective of the Future Studies. It is exposing certain theories of the future, as well as the history of research of this phenomenon in light of the recent rise of the study of the future, which, as a systematic planning and forecasting, takes a crucial place in the management of risks in present uncertain, complex and often contradictory times. The Future Studies examine global trends, challenges and opportunities faced by the modern world. It is assumed that the 21st century will be marked by identity, as opposed to the 20th century that was marked by ideology. In the globalized world comes to dissolution traditional core of identity which allowed the unity of one person. Without this core, an identity becomes pure contingency. What will become of the man of the future will depend on how the future world looks. But, what will be the world in the future?
