Summary/Abstract: A cross-sectional look at the structure of medieval thinking, in particular considering its impact on historiography. The author shows, using among others the example of two medieval chronicles and their later reception, how in the Middle Ages the Augustinian attitude to dealing with sources (the absolutisation of first-hand testimony) turned into admitting the interference of reason, which laid the foundations for future historical studies.
