The book identifies complex characteristic features of the media tradition of Akathists, based on the example of the text of the Akathist Hymn to the Mother of God and its performances as part of worship. An analysis of the complex functions fulfilled by the Akathist in serving the aims of remembering – often characterized by heterogeneity, accomplished in different ways and playing different roles. The Akathist Hymn to the Mother of God with its accompanying icon was one of the fundamental elements of Orthodox worship, influential also outside the Orthodox Church, e.g., in Polish territories.

The book is the first attempt to comprehensively examine and describe the daily writing practices of a Polish psychologist Julian Ochorowicz (1850-1917). More than one hundred notebooks of the scientist, now stored in the archives of the library of the Ossoliński Institute in Wrocław, constitute an extraordinary and so far unexplored source of knowledge about his intimate writing practices. The author proves that the method of introspection, crucial for the psychologist and understood as constantly repeated turning towards oneself, made it possible for Ochorowicz to choose his own research path and, consequently, to abandon the well-trodden paths of scientific development.

The publication of the famous British sociologist Paul Connerton was written in a very clear manner, it is short but extremely rich in content. It deals with many issues and refers to at least a dozen trends in research on memory. Cultural memory studies appear in the light of Connerton's considerations as a "non-paradigmatic" and "transdisciplinary" undertaking, based on sociology, history, psychology, literary criticism, anthropology, political science and many other disciplines. For the first time the publication appeared in 1989 in the prestigious series „Themes in the Social Sciences” published by Cambridge University Press. Since then, it has been published in eighteen subsequent editions, and has been translated into many European and Asian languages.

The author attempts to describe scientifically the most important and representative calvaries located in Poland. Remediation is the transformation of cinematic works as a result of their media transposition. Utilizing tools offered by media studies, film studies and culture studies, the author examines the changes which accompanied the transformation of silent cinema into digital cinema, as well as cinema’s relationship with the book and the ways in which these two mediums mix and influence each other. The analyses are based on two films: Strong Man and Metropolis, presenting the path of cultural texts starting with the book, continuing through silent cinema, and up to digitized cinema and film work currently found in the web.

The publication presents the early history of an encyclopedia in a detailed and multifaceted way, deepening the existing research on the issue. The author outlines the title metaphor of an encyclopedia as “manticore” – a hybrid entity composed of words imitating things, he thoroughly analyses theoretical problems of Western culture which are part of the encyclopedism, referring to its pre-modern realizations (from the lost work of Hippias of Elis to "Great Mirror" of Vincent of Beauvais and Benedykt Chmielowski’s "New Athens"). The books also explores Diderot’s "Encyclopédie" and the most important features of modern encyclopedias.

The monograph explores performative potential of narrative art in oral traditions of Altai and Middle Eastern culture. Turkish meddah inspires contemporary artists, offering an active model, equal for both the artist and the audience. As an artistic form it developed between the 11th and 19th century. It unites epic theatre of one actor with the elements of tradition of a nomadic narrator, Central Asian shaman, epic singer ozan, Arabic maddah and the Persian tradition of the narrator of The Shahnameh.

An anthology of texts by Aleida Assmann that corresponds to a growing interest in memory studies in Poland. Assmann is one of the most distinguished contemporary representatives of memory studies, who is in addition interested in the issues of memory in Central Eastern Europe. The author combines theoretical reflection, based on an approach originating in literary and cultural studies, with case studies illustrating the transformations of memory after the Second World War. The texts collected in the first part of the book present various concepts and typologies of memory that can be directly applied in analysing phenomena of Polish culture, in the second – various aspects of German and European memory politics.
