Summary/Abstract: The book identifies complex characteristic features of the media tradition of Akathists, based on the example of the text of the Akathist Hymn to the Mother of God and its performances as part of worship. An analysis of the complex functions fulfilled by the Akathist in serving the aims of remembering – often characterized by heterogeneity, accomplished in different ways and playing different roles. The Akathist Hymn to the Mother of God with its accompanying icon was one of the fundamental elements of Orthodox worship, influential also outside the Orthodox Church, e.g., in Polish territories.
