Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to show what role performed journals founded in the years 1901–1939 by book people in the development of book science and library science. The paper presents the functions of continuous publications (in the fields of book science, bibliophily, librarianship and library science) that shaped theoretical thought and research techniques of the evolving disciplines, formed the attitudes of librarians, mediated in sharing experience and modern methods of work organisation in the library, provided necessary information, among others, on possible forms of professional education. The first two chapters set out the conditions in which journals devoted to the book and the library had been established until 1939, present the profiles of the precursors who created the theoretical potential of Polish book science and library science, their views and the most important publishing repertoire, furthermore they outline the publishing and formal characteristics of the book people. In the third chapter, the composition of the examined scientific and professional journals was reconstructed (their structure, types of information) and the results of the content analysis were presented to show the contribution of a given title to the development of theoretical reflection and research trends that were reflected in its pages. The following nine journal titles were analysed: „Bibliotekarz” (Librarian) (1919), „Biuletyn Biblioteki Publicznej m.st. Warszawy” (the Bulletin of the Public Library of the Capital City of Warsaw) (1929-1939), „Exlibris” (1917–1929), „Książka” (Book) (1901–1914, 1922), „Pamiętnik Biblioteki Kórnickiej” (The Diary of the Kórnik Library) (1929–1930), „Przegląd Bibliograficzny” (The Bibliography Review) (1905–1926), „Przegląd Biblioteczny” (The Library Review) (1908–1911 [for the years 1908–1909]), „Przegląd Biblioteczny” (The Library Review) (1927–1939), and „Silva Rerum“ (1925–1939). In the fourth chapter, which serves the role of the summary, a model of bibliology and library science, worked out in the pages of the studied magazines, has been outlined. The chapter comprises the issues concerning bibliology and library science discussed in the journals, their contribution to the development of the methodology and terminology within the discipline of book science and library science and inspirations in the then Polish and foreign scientific works. Subsequently, the research topics that were dealt with in the examined magazines and were continued after 1945 have been presented. The results of the study made it possible to confirm the contribution of the journals in the followings: documenting the development and dissemination of theories, scientific views and results of scientific research within the domains of the book science and library science; learning about the achievements of the world science and the reception of them in Poland; popularising the scientific though among the people working and dealing with the book. The work is intended for specialists in various fields, representing primarily the broadly understood science concerning the book, as well as for press experts, cultural sociologists and researchers dealing with the history of science.
