Summary/Abstract: In Polish historiography, Jan Gottlieb Bloch (1836–1902) appears as an outstanding representative of the bourgeoisie of the Russian partition. He is presented primarily as a financier and builder of the railways, as well as the author of a modern concept of pacifism based on economic arguments. However, his numerous studies on economic topics are almost unknown. Influenced by the spirit of the so-called German Historical School, Bloch analyzed the economic reality of tsarist Russia and the Polish territories under Muscovite rule. In the course of his research, he noticed the connection between economic development and the extremely authoritarian political system in the Russian Empire – tsarist autocracy. The author of the monograph presents the economic output of Jan Gottlieb Bloch and confronts his conclusions with the views of contemporary economists and economic historians concerning the impact of Russian authoritarianism on the economic development of the Kingdom of Poland.
