Summary/Abstract: “The main function of traditional media is to provide timely information to the public, but today, traditional media cannot fulfill these expectations with regard to the fluid nature of global migration. New digital media technologies such social media have arisen to fill the void, narrating the lives of migrants in artistic terms that bear the traces of the major social issues of migration. In this critical anthology, contributors examine the intersection of migration, art, and media studies in order to critically analyse the impact of their confluence upon migrant and receiving communities.”Vildan Mahmutoğlu is Associate Professor at Galatasaray University, Istanbul. Her research interests include migration, local cultures, gender, and minorities. Her published book chapters include “A Glimmer of Hope for Mass Media in a Liberal democracy: istanbulrumazinligi.com” and “Global media Entertainment: star search.” Her current research is about gender in diaspora. John Morán González is the J. Frank Dobie Regents Professor of American and English Literature at the University of Texas at Austin, where he is also Director of the Center for Mexican American Studies. - Summary/Abstract:In contrast to voluntary migration for education, work or better living conditions, one of the biggest problems of our day is forced migration. Because of wars or hunger, people leave their home country to go to places that they do not know in order to be safe. Cinema is a technical invention, and usually the plots of films come from society’s issues. The science fiction film genre depicts today’s issues in a future setting. In this study, the film District 9 is analysed to understand the representation of aliens trapped on Earth due to the failure of their spaceships, and the resulting response from the institutions and countries hosting them. To analyse the film, the key concepts of science fiction films and asylum seekers are employed.

- Summary/Abstract:This chapter examines the reflection of border imagery in various artistic productions related to refugeehood and theoretically analyzes its relation to abjection. The prominent role of border priority in its theories and practices on abjection makes contemporary art a decisive field of inquiry to conceptualize terms of artistic reconciliation and oppositional trends against otherization while popularization of isolationism prevails at global level. I contend that the contextualization of politics of pity versus politics of justice provides a better understanding on the potentiality of these artistic practices to reach anti-migrant sensibilities deriving from the notion of ableism for citizenship with specific criteria of “merit”. Ableism generically defines migrants as ‘harmful’ to the host national community’s “health”. Throughout this survey, I explore how difference produced through refugee abjection has been contested and whether such creative interventions address alternative belonging precepts. I question what kinds of representational projection can reconcile the conflicts of interests between various publics that constitutes the society, including host and incoming members.

- Summary/Abstract:The post-Yugoslav cultural scene is especially complex and dynamic. Playwriting and theatre in this region are important forms of artistic expression, reflections of social problems, instruments of memory, and the reminders of accountability. Transfer is becoming more evident in production, promotion, (re)formation and support regarding the development of post-Yugoslav theatre. This particular field of artistic work is also characterised by thematization of migration, cultural mobility, transcultural potential, and the power to shape reality, and new levels of dialog. The basic aim of this paper is to describe the specific character of dramatic works and theatrical productions about migration initiated at the end of the twentieth century and beginning of the twenty-first in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia. Interpretation will focus on the most representative examples. The analysis requires an interdisciplinary approach and a reference to the concept of cultural mobility (S. Greenblatt) and transculturality (W. Welsch).

- Summary/Abstract:This chapter explores human mobility, migration, and body modification as presented in ancient Near Eastern literature and art. More specifically, it gives an account of a particular set of literary responses to processes of identity negotiation and acculturation in the wake of different instances of migration in the ancient Levant. The primary case study for this exploration is the biblical account of Joseph, a young Hebrew who is sold into slavery but rises to unimaginable success in the land of Egypt. The intent of this chapter, within the context of this larger project on migration and media, is to demonstrate how the story of Joseph, as a stylized literary depiction of a forced migrant, can be understood in relationship with other forms of stylized media regarding mobility, migration, and body-modification in the ancient Near East.

- Summary/Abstract:This chapter focuses on discourses and counter-discourses in the specific context of Romanians migrating to the United Kingdom. The analysis reveals the role of Romanian and British journalists in the problematization of migration, taking into account two different contexts: the freedom of movement for Romanian and Bulgarian citizens to work inside the United Kingdom, starting with January 1, 2014 and the British referendum in June 23, 2016. In doing so, the corpus covers five interactive mass-media campaigns on Romanian migration - Don’t Come to Britain! (The Guardian, January 2013), Why Don’t You Come Over? (Gândul, January 2013), Let’s Change the Story! (Gândul, January 2014), The Truth about Romanians Migrating to the UK (Adevărul, March 2014) and Romanians Adopt Remainians (Gândul, June 2016) and 100 news articles around the campaigns. Methodologically, the analysis is based on qualitative research methods, combining multimodal analysis (Iedema, 2003; Kress & van Leeuwen, 2006) with critical discourse analysis (Van Dijk, 1993; van Leeuwen, 2008) and dispositif analysis (Charaudeau, 2005; Lochard, 2005, 2006; Soulages, 2007). Generally, the analysis proves that Romanian journalists have overcome their role as professionals (they no longer adopt a traditional role), by involving the citizens in the public debate on migration, and, more extensively, on the country image problem.

- Summary/Abstract:The ubiquity of social media and information communication technologies (ICT) has a tremendous impact on refugees and immigrants’ experiences (Cassar et al., 2016). Despite this potential impact, we know very little about the experiences of immigrants and refugees with these technologies. Furthermore, to have a complete understanding, we need to investigate how NGOs utilize ICTs and social media in their work with refugees and immigrants. This paper presents a literature overview on these topics to answer the following research questions: what are the main reasons refugees and immigrant use social media and ICT? What are the barriers that refugees encounter in using social media and ICT? How do NGOs use social media and ICT for helping refugees and immigrants? What are the barriers of using and social media and ICT by NGOs? We found that immigrants and refugees use ICT and social media for various reasons including communication, information seeking, content creation and sharing, entertainment and escaping, as well as for surviving. Among the barriers are low digital literacies, limited access to new technologies and refugees’ lack of trust in information resources. When it comes to NGOs reasons, we found for helping to reach vast amount refugees and immigrants, organizing aid campaigns, defending refugees or immigrants’ rights as well as recording the statistics of refugees, immigrants or aids. Finally, we found that the barriers NGOs face with ICT and social media use are receiving the trustable data from internet, fear of information sharing by vulnerable refugees and immigrants with NGOs and possibility of failure of the data systems NGO’s use.

- Summary/Abstract:Social networking sites (SNSs), especially nowadays, have become an inevitable and essential component part of life (Schivinski & Dariusz, 2016). Even though there have been numerous researches and studies on the SNSs in relation to users’ tendencies and advertising, the use of social media in relation to effects of space and environment on the perception of users has been lacking in the literature. This paper offers a perspective to consider the interrelations between the use of SNSs among Syrian refugees with various purposes, such as navigating their migration routes and safety, and the refugee camps as a temporary habitat (Diken & Laustsen, 2002). While refugee camps do not provide enough spaces and activities for socializing and spending time, most Syrian refugees spend their time online by the use of social media platforms as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and WhatsApp. With long-term ethnographic fieldwork on the intense use of SNSs among Syrian refugees in the refugee camps in Turkey, Greece, and Germany created extensive data. The gathered data shows that being in a vulnerable position as a refugee and staying in a restricted and limited space motivates and encourages [Syrian] refugees to spend more time online. However, one of results of this research claims that seeking new places to migrate and settle in by overusing SNSs, at least 4-5 hours in a daytime, creates a desire and misperception regarding destinated places that become desired places (Deleuze and Guattari, 1983; 2013).
