- Summary/Abstract:After the partitions of Poland, the Statute of Lithuania (1588) remained the basic source of law in the territories incorporated into Russia. The statute, albeit with the provisions on the state system and criminal law removed, retained quite far-reaching application in the field of civil law until its eventual repeal (1840). In addition to the statute, the Sejm constitutions, the resolutions of the Permanent Council and customary law remained in force. Yet Russian legislation began to influence Polish-Lithuanian law and slowly transformed it. To research this phenomenon, it is important to analyse the ukases issued for the“Polish governorates”. The printed sources include numerous materials of this kind. However, it would be desirable to pay more attention to lower-order acts, which are close to the practice of governing. It would be necessary to find and publish regulations and instructions of the High Courts and the ukases of the provincial governments (and even extracts from the minutes of their sessions). As a prelude to these activities, ukases, governors’ ordinances, resolutions, orders and instructions published in the governorate journals could be reprinted. From Kurier Litewski [The Lithuanian Courier], one could draw Polish translations of the Tsar’s and the Senate’s ukases, manifestos, governor’s decrees, notices of tax chambers, ministers’ recommendations, announcements of governorate marshals and courts. It could be useful to issue in print manuscript legal compendiums, which illustrate the practical application of the provisions of the statute, and other sources – both domestic and Russian. The Western Code, published in print a long time ago, as well as the codification project for the Belostok (Białystok) Oblast from 1811, issued a few years ago, offer great potential for research on the law of the “Polish governorates”. A digitalization of selected court records would also be very useful.

- Keywords:Duchy of Warsaw; Congress Poland; history of law; editions of historical and legal sources; codification of law
- Summary/Abstract:The article identifies the most important history of law sources from the period of the Duchy of Warsaw and of Congress Poland (until the Russification of the judicial system in 1876), which were published already in the 19th century as well as later on. Discussed are both publications of official nature issued by the state and those of a private character prepared by individuals not affiliated with state bodies. Some sources were also published at a later time, usually as scholarly works. The author synthetically discusses the various categories of sources (normative bills, minutes of sessions of Parliament and executive authorities, documents concerning legal practice, such as court rulings) and indicates where normative content can be found (promulgation journals of the Duchy of Warsaw, Congress Poland, France and the annexing powers; translations of German- and French-language laws published both by public institutions and private individuals). Furthermore, postulates as to the continuation of editing work and digitalisation are formulated. The author has especially high hopes for the latter, as they could significantly improve access to 19th-century sources. However, in order for a digitalization of large archival units to fully contribute to the development of scholarship, it should also be coupled with a proper description of scans and with proper auxiliary tools (especially indexes).

- Summary/Abstract:Franciszek Ksawery Bohusz’s report from the 1803 general inspection of schools in the Vilnius School District was written in prelude to reforms of the education system in Russia in the early years of the 19th century. It covers the inspections of 31 secondary schools in three governorates: Grodno, Minsk and Vilna. The report is a topical source for researching many aspects of the history of education and social history more generally in a large part of the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The article presents the history of the manuscript and its migration between institutions collecting manuscript sources. The analysis covers unrealised editing attempts of the report made in various periods (Ludwik Chmaj, Meilė Lukšienė). Currently, the document is held in the Manuscript Division of the Vilnius University Library. The author is preparing for publication its critical edition; the model of this edition is also discussed in the article. The reconstruction of previous publication attempts and the presentation of the model for the prepared edition can lead to the conclusion that the requirements for source editions are becoming more and more demanding.

(Polish Preaching Literature in the 19th Century – a Question about the Need for Scientific Publication)
- Author(s):Martyna Deszczyńska
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):19th Century
- Page Range:69-90
- No. of Pages:22
- Keywords:history of Poland; 19th century; historical sources; sermons; edition
- Summary/Abstract:The article discusses the need for scientific publication of 19th-century sermons. This period in Polish history was characterized by extraordinary limitations for domestic culture and restrictions of freedom of speech and civil rights in the circumstances of lack of the state. The author gives the definitions of sermons, lists their types and describes their ecclesiastical manner of predication as well as their role as a special kind of literary output and a special historical resource of a particular meaning. Sermons reflected not only moral imperatives and religious precepts but also the mentality of the clergymen and showed their intellectual level (references to literature, tradition, history and its eminent historical figures). They said much about the listeners, mostly non-reading and non-writing people of various denominations hailing from the lower classes. The content of sermons expressed the common cultural code between preachers and the faithful, and potential changes of the code in this period, which involved introducing new symbols and notions. The article stipulates examples of famous preachers (whose influence stretched for decades), especially from eastern territories of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The importance of sermons as a historical source was examined with regard to the medieval history as well as the 19th-century history. It was found that for the 19th-century history research, sermons are an unknown theme in terms of methodology. The author states that the omission of sermons as historical sources impoverishes our knowledge of the epoch and also reduces the base of available testimonies to the past. After analysis of the subject literature, the author presents problems facing a future publisher of a scientific edition of sermons, and formulates her own criteria of selection and editing of materials (manuscripts from archives or sermons printed in the 19th century), which must be taken into account to choose representative or otherwise necessary sources for publication. These criteria fall into three categories, encompassing those related to: the listeners, the occasion of preaching, such as an anniversary, and the affiliation of the preacher. The answer to the question posed in the title is absolutely positive. The author considers potential scientific publication of 19th-century sermons an important step in supplementing knowledge about the epoch among scholars and students.

- Summary/Abstract:Governors-general were among the most important officials of the provincial administration of the Russian Empire in the 19th century. They were subordinate to the Tsar himself, and one of their privileges was the possibility of sending reports on the state of affairs in their provinces directly to the ruler. This gave them the opportunity not only to provide him with information about the current situation, but also to point out the problems which – in their opinion – needed to be dealt with most urgently. This article analyses the reports of the governors-general of the Southwestern Krai (Kiev, Podolia and Volhynia Governorates) in 1864–1868, i.e. in the first years after the suppression of the Polish January Uprising. For understandable reasons, a lot of space was devoted to issues related to the Polish minority in the country. Drawing on the example of five reports of the governors-general of the Southwestern Krai, this article highlights the specificity of these documents as a historical source, the need for editing of this type of documents, and the editorial difficulties in their preparation and publication.

- Summary/Abstract:This article offers a review of the output of the Friends of Sciences Society in Vilnius, which existed from 1908 to 1939, in terms of primary historical sources editing. During the 1908–1921 period, primary sources were published in the "Yearbook of the Friends of Sciences Society in Vilnius". The Society members selected and prepared the materials for publication themselves. They undertook this task with the purpose of presenting hitherto unknown historical sources, popularising knowledge about them and facilitating access to them for researchers and those interested in national history. However, the Society did not possess the funds to increase the number of publications in a meaningful way. The greatest achievement in the publication of primary historical sources during that time was undoubtedly the publication of newly discovered letters of Tadeusz Kościuszko. After 1922, new, much greater possibilities for publishing primary historical documents materialised when the reformed Society began working in close cooperation with the Stefan Batory University and other Polish academic institutions, and received financial support from the (Polish) Fund for National Culture. This cooperation translated into an increase of primary materials published in the academic magazine "Ateneum Wileńskie" [Vilnius Athenaeum] and in the series "Sources and Historical Materials of the Third Department of the Friends of Sciences Society in Vilnius", and it allowed for maintaining a higher editorial level of the publications. The sources most often published concerned political and military issues, the history of the Catholic Church, education with special emphasis on Vilnius University, and battles of national liberation on the lands of the former Great Duchy of Lithuania. The Society’s academic and editorial output is its lasting legacy that is still in use by researchers today.

- No. of Pages:27
- Keywords:notarial documents; book registers; probates; auction results; readership; middle class; Christians; Jews; female elite; Haskalah; Chełm; Ruthenia
- Summary/Abstract:The purpose of the work is to examine the benefits of abstraction of book registers from notarial documents (probates and auction results) and the development of pertinent bibliological and historical commentary. The book collections of two middle-class inhabitants of the city of Chełm were analysed – in this case, a Christian and a Jew: Tadeusz Wylęgiewicz (ca. 1791–1825) and Rala Byk née Ettinger (ca. 1793–1824). The results of the analysis may be surprising – the set of books of the city tax collector can be likened to a priest’s library, while the library of the young widow reveals a cosmopolitan outlook and clearly indicates the impact of the Haskalah movement. The transfer of books and ideas is revealed to have occurred across confessional and ethnic boundaries. Auction records also list individual purchasers of the books – in examining these closer, the less obvious interactions and interests of the local educated society can be traced. Both cases, because of their peculiarity – especially the latter as a female member of the Jewish elite – attest, firstly, to the cultural potential of a minor city at the Western edges of the former Ruthenian Voivodeship and, secondly, make a strong case for establishing a broader study sample of other remaining book lists in the notarial documents of the city of Chełm.

- Keywords:anthroponyms; translation; paratranslation activities; translation techniques; recognised equivalent; transcription; transliteration
- Summary/Abstract:This paper is devoted to the transfer of anthroponyms in translation from Russian into Polish as exemplified by historical texts and sources. The author notes the difficulties that this class of proper names causes both in purely translation and in paratranslation activities. Taking into account the properties of anthroponyms as well as practical recommendations and translation solutions, the author suggests a division of the analysed anthroponyms into four groups: Russian anthroponyms; Russified anthroponyms originating from languages with a Cyrillic script, in the case of which it is necessary to establish the source language; foreign anthroponyms originating from languages with a Latin script; and Polish anthroponyms written in Cyrillic, the latter two requiring reconstruction of their primary form. Using examples in each group, possible translation techniques are discussed, in particular: the selection of a recognised equivalent (compliance with tradition), translation, transcription and transliteration.
