The Parrot Case

Summary/Abstract: The paper describes problems that a philologist may encounter when translating/interpreting/commenting on ancient texts about a parrot. Due to its foreignness and relatively late appearance in the Mediterranean world, the parrot is a good example of the difficulties encountered by a philologist working without the support of a zoologist. The parrot as a case example is at the same time a kind of synecdoche of much more complex problems, always appearing at the interface of disciplines.
