Summary/Abstract: The concept of psychological resistance refers to an extremely complex phenomenon through the multitude of facets, which different authors have described in different terms, such as: resistance to treatment (more common in psychodynamic approaches), non-compliance (predominantly in cognitive-behavioral), non-adherence (commonly used in medicine), stalemate (widely used in models who prefer an interpersonal approach to the phenomenon). Thus, the relevance of resistance to change in the therapeutic relationship is of particular interest to several authors who say that coping with resistance is essential to better understand therapeutic change and to reduce its abandonment or failure.
