Summary/Abstract: Life imprisonment sentence has caused controversies since the beginning of the rene-wed Polish statehood. In criminal law from Moderne Schule perspective this extreme punishment was imposed on dangerous criminals (habitual criminal, gefährliche Gewohnheitsverbrecher) who had to be permanently isolated from the society. In the beginning, life imprisonment in the dual-track system was administered along with post-penal safeguard measures. The author attempts to synthesise the evolution of life imprisonment sentence and presents concerns about it. He implies that the return to wide use of post-penal detention is an especially worrying trend in modern law.
