Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the dissenting opinion in the criminal proceedings and its importance in imposing life imprisonment sentence. The author presents legal provisions governing the conditions for the submission of a dissenting sentence from the perspective of its functions, which are crucial both for the parties to the proceedings and the social impact of judicial decisions. He analyses the standards for administering life imprisonment sentence defined by the European Court of Human Rights, the Supreme Court and the appeals courts. On the example of the decisions of general courts, the author discusses the reasons for life imprisonment sentences, the grounds of judgements in dissenting opinions and their common, converging elements.
