Summary/Abstract: In this paper we analyse language biographies of the students from the Departments of German language and literature at the University of Sarajevo and University of Tuzla. We designed a questionnaire with 70 questions, mostly related to learning and using German as well as other foreign languages, as a data collection tool. The study included 84 subjects. The Department of German has undergone three different phases. In the first phase, before enrolling at university, students had mostly learned German in school. In the second phase, most students had learned German while living as refugees in German-speaking countries. The third phase is the current phase, and it is marked by a different profile of students: they learned German in school, but also by watching television and some of them used to live in a German-speaking country, as well. This research is to describe the profiles of the current students at the Departments of German language and literature in Bosnia and Herzegovina, so the study programmes and curriculums can be adjusted.
