- Summary/Abstract:The aim of this paper is to describe the structure, frequency and communicational functions of the [Nnom1 +machen+sich+ADJ2 ] construction, in political reports from selected German daily newspapers. In order to describe this construction, we use methods of Construction Grammar. Construction Grammar is one of the most attractive theoretical models of language description in the last few decades which sees structures as unity of form and meaning at all linguistic levels. The paper reconstructs the [Nnom+machen+sich+ADJ] construction as a complex construction on the sentence level, through the combination of constructions at lexeme level, paired with a certain meaning, which is determined by the type of a construction.

- Summary/Abstract:This paper aims at investigating the functional usage and the frequency of Germanisms in Croatian language. In order to reach this goal, we analyzed the news portal 24 sata in a three months span (from 1st December 2018 to 1st March 2019). We did a semantic analysis of the headlines and subtitles in the categories NEWS (World, Politics) and SHOW (Celebrities). We included a contrastive description of the meaning and meaning changes as well as speaker specific, regional and stylistic characteristics. Additionally we are concerned with the issue in which way and how historical and identity aspects lead to the sarcastic and ironic meaning of the Germanisms, that are expressive linguistic tools for newspaper headlines and subtitels.

- Summary/Abstract:In this exploratory-qualitative study a tendency towards nominalizations is investigated, which is a phenomenon increasingly present in the contemporary political discourse, i.e. in political debates of the German Parliament. This linguistic phenomenon is looked into within the framework of Political Discourse Analysis (PDA), a subbranch of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), as a means of compressing sentence structure from the pragmatic-semantic aspect. The article has three aims: to identify the tendency towards nominalizations in German parliamentary debates during the 19 election period, to interpret nominal expressions in the sense of underlying political concepts and to point out to possible pragmatic implications of their usage. In analyzing this linguistic phenomenon we start from three previously known assumptions within Discourse Analysis: (1) discourse makes use of preconstructed knowledge, which can formally be demonstrated by the use of nominalizations, (2) by converting expressions into nominalizations the potential agent gets lost and (3) the absence of an external source leads to depersonalization and unintelligibility. The analysis is conducted on the corpus of 21 speeches and their plenary proceedings of German MPs, which were held in German Parliament at parliamentary meetings on three different topics. Nominal expressions are extracted, listed according to their derivation base and classified depending on what they denote. A qualitative data analysis is employed to show that the MPs use nominalizations as a strategy for the abstraction of their political speeches. The aim of this strategy is to distance oneself from an already existing formulation and to strenghten one’s own and weaken the opponents’ linguistic resources.
Freie Relativsätze im deutsch-kroatischen Sprachvergleich
Freie Relativsätze im deutsch-kroatischen Sprachvergleich
(Free relative clauses in the German-Croatian language comparison)
- Author(s):Senka Marinčić
- Language:German
- Subject(s):Language studies, Syntax, Comparative Linguistics, South Slavic Languages
- Page Range:76-96
- No. of Pages:31
- Keywords:German language; Croatian language; Free relative clauses; comparison;
- Summary/Abstract:The paper deals with fused or free relative clauses, i.e. the relative clauses that have no antecedent in the matrix clause, but, nevertheless, have the clause status within the matrix clause: Gib ihm, [was er wünscht]. – Daj mu, [što želi] (Give him [what he wants]). In the matrix clause, [Gib ihm] and [Daj mu] ([Give him]), the direct object of [gib] or [daj] ([give]) is missing. The free relative clause [was er wünscht] or [što želi] ([what he wants]) becomes the direct object of the verb [gib] or [daj] ([give]). The two languages, i.e. German and Croatian, will be contrasted in the following parameters: free relative clause marker, subordinate function of free relative clause, case hierarchy of free relative clauses as well as their positional properties. The study is not corpus based, but rather a contrastive analysis of the respective parameters.

- Summary/Abstract:In this paper we analyse language biographies of the students from the Departments of German language and literature at the University of Sarajevo and University of Tuzla. We designed a questionnaire with 70 questions, mostly related to learning and using German as well as other foreign languages, as a data collection tool. The study included 84 subjects. The Department of German has undergone three different phases. In the first phase, before enrolling at university, students had mostly learned German in school. In the second phase, most students had learned German while living as refugees in German-speaking countries. The third phase is the current phase, and it is marked by a different profile of students: they learned German in school, but also by watching television and some of them used to live in a German-speaking country, as well. This research is to describe the profiles of the current students at the Departments of German language and literature in Bosnia and Herzegovina, so the study programmes and curriculums can be adjusted.

- Summary/Abstract:German is taught all over the world and is one of the world’s major languages, but in today’s globalized world, its prevalence and meaning are significantly falling behind other languages, primarily English and Spanish. Where is German spoken and taught today at all, what is the position of German in the world, in Europe, in the EU? The proximity of Croatia, as well as the countries of south-eastern Europe, in relation to the German-speaking countries, as well as the developed economic, political, cultural and scientific relations with these countries, makes the German language one of the most important foreign languages. Despite the dominance of English, German is still taught in schools and colleges in southeast European countries. German is one of the most important European business languages and as such could become a bridge between central and south-eastern Europe. The paper deals with the presence, meaning and learning of German in the world, as well as its role and further prospects on the territory of south-east European countries. The focus of our research is the analysis of the position, presence and learning of the German language as a foreign language in Croatia, with particular emphasis on tourism. The research was based on the example of the presence and learning of German as a foreign language in Zadar County.

- Summary/Abstract:Literary scene of our country beginning from the middle of the 1990s years of the last century until nowadays has been divided into two large groups – on one side are the authors who left Bosnia and continued their literary path in another country. On the other side, a great number of authors still live here and face the need to “process” difficult war experiences and find their way out of a kind artistic isolation. This literary display gives itself a task to explore the model of “distant proximity” based on a few short stories from the corpus of the author Dragoslav Dedović A child. A woman. A soldier. A town. All the authors in this anthology were faced with the problem to alienation in their own or someone else’s town. Literary scenario of these authors always vary between two worlds, between two regions. They all are in search for one connection between past and future. Their literary opus is a unique tribute to their former homeland, respectively the critical view of country in which they live now.

- Author(s):Ivica Bevanda
- Language:German

- Keywords:German literature; Johann Wolfgang von Goethe; romantic elements;
- Summary/Abstract:As already known, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is a writer whose artistic genius means that he should be considered outside of the rigid histories of literary history. Nonetheless, one should be able to analyze stylistically the poetic and exact poetic specifications of the ‘Goethe era’ and especially poetologically hybrid literary works. In the present contribution, selected works of the genius of the Weimarer Klassiker are scrutinized from the point of view of romantic poetology – in the context of previous Goethe research. The romantic elements in individual works or the completely romantic work of Goethe seem to prove that the Romantic as part of his complete writing is not a break in style, but a spontaneous, ingenious expansion of style as well as a disruption of cultural-political as well as institutional drawer rigidity in terms of periodization can be considered. To answer the question of whether Goethe can also be a kind of syncretism or a phenomenon that can be explained otherwise would also be the task of the present article.
Die Balkanstaaten in ausgewählten Werken von Juli Zeh

(The Balkan States in selected works by Juli Zeh)
- Author(s):Darija Glibić
- Language:German
- Subject(s):Regional Geography, German Literature, Cultural Anthropology / Ethnology, Sociology of Literature
- Page Range:187-199
- No. of Pages:13
- Keywords:Juli Zeh; Balkan states; German literature;
- Summary/Abstract:The paper will deal with various images and stereotypes of Balkan countries in the works Adler und Engel and Die Stille ist ein Geräusch of Juli Zeh. The emergence of stereotypes is often linked to the perception of one’s own and thus to the constitution of a self-image. Juli Zeh is one of the best German authors of the younger generation. The Balkans prove to be the leitmotif in these works. Her debut novel Adler und Engel (2003) has been translated into 31 languages and speaks about drug trafficking and war in the Balkans. In 2001 she traveled to Bosnia and Herzegovina and in her travelogue Die Stille ist ein Geräusch (2001) describes the country and first-hand experiences after the war. In conclusion, it can be said that Juli Zeh does not deal theoretically with stereotypes, but postulates the concepts with which people perceive and interpret the world. She wants to get to know and experience the unknown country herself and introduce her to the people. In doing so, however, she indirectly, subconsciously also produces negatively connoted stereotypes.

- Summary/Abstract:The research problem of the article is the standard German language varieties spoken in German-speaking countries and their application in teaching German as a foreign language (DaF-Unterricht). The diachronic investigation includes Communicative didactics with its intercultural approach, ABCD theses, the DACH principle and cultural and regional studies as a guide to teaching linguistic and cultural content in DaF lessons, which is the theoretical basis for further exemplary studies. The pluricentric aspect of the German language in DaF lessons is examined through the following question: Do the textbooks support cultural and pluricentric aspects in our DaF lessons? – How does eating rolls or bread, riding a bike or a bicycle affect communication? DaF lessons should enable the learners to relate such things to specific German-speaking countries and thus understand their cultural and regional traits. The paper deals with the possibilities, problems and suggestions that are based not only on the textbooks but also on literary works, authentic texts, quizzes, Internet researches and other similar content.
