Summary/Abstract: The paper represents a comparative study of the cases in which in Bulgarian and Russian there is a competition between the dative and the prepositional complement with the preposition для/за 'for' in stative predicative constructions. The relation between the type of complement and the choice of complement clause is considered. Based on empirical data from both languages, general tendencies as well as language-specific features such as control rules in Russian or cases of raising an argument from the subordinate clause are outlined.
