- Summary/Abstract:The paper deals with the (language) landscape of contemporary cities, taking Sofia as an example. Instead of dividing the linguistic and graphic material (collected in 2020 and 2021 in the Bulgarian capital) into the usual categories of top-down signs and bottom-up signs used in landscape-related studies, I propose a novel concept centred around design and the human senses. The two proposed categories will be described in detail and further subdivided into lexical and graphic entities in a way that would enable the adoption of a synthetic approach to studying the specifics of the Bulgarian capital through the prism of its (language) landscape. The article highlights the advantages of the collected empirical material and its systematisation as well as the prospective lines of research that could benefit from it.

- Keywords:motivational linguistic maps; names for primus spinosa (prunellier); Roman languages and dialects
- Summary/Abstract:Motivational maps concern the dynamic of language, revealing thus a less known or less studied aspect, the motivation of the linguistic sign. This is a permanent process since the speakers “remotivate” the linguistic sign when the rapport between this and the extralinguistic reality (the referent) becomes opaque, not transparent. Elaborated, up to the present moment, at a European and Romance level, motivational linguistic maps can also be realized at a national level. In our contribution, we present, for the first time, such a map regarding the Romanian language, realized on the basis of the Atlas Linguarum Europae (ALE) and Atlas linguistique roman (ALiR). The contribution presents the words designating PRUNELLIER in the romance languages and dialects. At the same time, it results from our contribution the dynamic perspective on language, i.e. the motivational linguistic “strata” in etymology. Prunellier

- Subject(s):Language studies, Language and Literature Studies, Theoretical Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Lexis, Comparative Linguistics, Phraseology
- Page Range:34-44
- No. of Pages:10
- Keywords:lexicology; Bulgarian-Polish vocabulary; archaization; colloquialization
- Summary/Abstract:The subject of discussion are some areas of Bulgarian-Polish comparative lexicology, which are insufficiently studied and represent a field for the implementation of interesting research projects. The aim is to describe the state of research in these areas and to present ideas for their expansion. The focus is on two areas – the comparative study of archaization and the colloquialization of vocabulary in both languages. With regard to archaization, examples are given of asymmetries in the field of vocabulary extinction, which present cases in which tokens from one language are obsolete and in another language are in active function. The author assumes that the factors that provide this “second life” of outdated vocabulary outside the territory of the national language are primarily non-linguistic in nature and their comparative study is interesting. The paper also touches on the state of comparative Bulgarian-Polish research in the field of colloquial vocabulary, the more in-depth study of which is necessary due to the current trend towards colloquialization of the language.

- Keywords:event extraction; terminology extraction; dictionaries
- Summary/Abstract:In this paper we present an overview of event detection for conflict events, such as battles and other military operations, from news streams. We then evaluate a terminology extraction algorithm for learning Bulgarian lexica specific to military conflicts. The domain-specific dictionaries related to conflicts may often require thousands of entities, including professions, military ranks, weapons, vehicles, actions, organization names, relevant adjectives and other lexica. The evaluation shows very promising results, with the accuracy of the learning algorithm exceeding 80%, thus proving the feasibility of event detection for the Bulgarian language.

- Keywords:Gorani; dialect vocabulary; folk calendar; folk etymology
- Summary/Abstract:The article presents an ethnolinguistic analysis of the vocabulary of calendar rituals as part of the lexicon of the traditional folk culture of the Gorani, Islamized Bulgarians. They form one of the Slavic enclaves in Albania. By professing Islam, the Gorani retain the old Christian calendar, which, however, has been rethought in view of agricultural tasks and general well-being. The dominant part of the ritual terminology is of domestic origin (Stredzima, Korezelyanitsi, Blagoets), with the exception of the names of the Muslim rites (Kurban Bayram, Ramadan Bayram, Nevruz). There are cases of the folk etymology among the chrononyms.

- Keywords:natural language ontology; Davidsonian states; modals; existentials; predicatives; Russian language; Bulgarian language; biclausality
- Summary/Abstract:I discuss holistic and partial predicate ontologies, with focus on the realization of static spatiotemporal predicates in Russian and Bulgarian. I follow the distribution of three constructions with dative case marking on the semantic subject. Modern Bulgarian and Modern Russian share only one of them – dative-predicative structures (DPS), while Russian and Old Slavic languages also use dative-infinitive structures (DIS) as the main cue of expressing the meaning of external modality. The third type – hybrid predicates headed by a negative existential – is a bridge construction between DIS and DPS. Hybrid predicates like негде спать (no place to sleep), некого винить (no one to blame) originated in Old Russian as embedded DIS sentences, but drifted towards DPS. They are partly integrated in the ontology of the Modern Russian DPS construction and behave as modal predicatives with a number of deviating features.

- Keywords:quantity; definite quantity; exact definite quantity; approximate definite quantity; numerical form of masculine nouns; masculine-person numerals
- Summary/Abstract:The paper presents a detailed review of Bulgarian grammar works (19th c. – 21st c.) on the so-called numerical form of non-person plural masculine nouns. To this end, the content of the object quantity relations and their expression in language have been reconsidered. The distinction between definite quantity and indefinite quantity has been introduced, definite quantity being further subdivided into exact definite quantity and approximate definite quantity. It is suggested that the term numerical form (broyna forma) should be replaced by the more appropriate term definite quantity form (forma za opredeleno kolichestvo). The paper also focuses on the status, meaning and use of masculine-person numerals.

- Keywords:diathesis; verb alternations; semantic classes of predicates
- Summary/Abstract:The current study is based on the model of Igor Melchuk for a formal description of voice, which is transferred to cases in which the verb diatheses result in a propositional change. Such diatheses may be due to a change in the semantic relations of the arguments to the predicate or to a change (reduction) in the number of arguments. We establish the inventory of diatheses with propositional change. Complementary, the verb alternations described by Beth Levin (if they are valid for Bulgarian), as well as the language-specific alternations are checked whether they belong to any of the identified diatheses. The reflection of the alternations at the morphological and syntactic level are described. It is also shown in which cases the diatheses lead to a transformation from a dynamic to a stative eventuality type.

- No. of Pages:10
- Keywords:indefinite pronouns; emphasis; predicative unit; concessive subordinator
- Summary/Abstract:The paper presents initial observations on the status of the composite type ‘koyto shte da e’. For this purpose, extensive illustrative material was extracted and considered from Bulgarian corpora and from Internet. The usages of this composite as indefinite pronoun were described as well as its usages as weak subordinator. Due to the weakened subordinator nature, the composite has been interpreted rather as a separate predicative unit in speech. In the first case the composite is a synonym of the pronouns of type ‘(to) i da e’ while in the second case it is synonymous to the expression ‘no matter who’. Attention has been paid also to the contexts, in which the pronoun and predicative usages compete. In both realizations however ‘koyto shte da e’ has been marked with the feature [+absolute arbitrariness of choice] and it expresses higher degrees of emphasis. We suppose that these characteristics of the composite are due to the inclusion of the modal formant ‘shte’. It has been shown that in the process of grammaticalization from the concessive subordinators to indefinite pronouns there exist various transitional stages between the predicative nature and the nominal one.

- Keywords:complex mixed sentence; structurography; statistics; intonation contour
- Summary/Abstract:The report presents the results of the work on creating of a research corpus of structurografically processed complex mixed sentences. The purpose of the created corpus is to compare the primary sketch, structure diagram and acoustic image of 500 complex mixed sentences. An analysis of 200 new sentences is also presented. The medium for statistical analysis of data - IBM SPSS Statistics v.19, has been used for the statistical processing of the data obtained from configuration syntactic analysis. In this way new information and new conclusions about the proportions in the sentence structure are being reached. It has been proven that the data obtained from each sample are valid for the whole work. An excerpt of 100 sentences from the novel “The Farm at the Border” by Yordan Yovkov and an excerpt of 100 sentences from the novel “Noah’s Ark” by Yordan Radichkov have been considered. The article also examines the quantitative distribution of the subordinate clauses in both novels in comparison with the data from a previous study of the novel “Antichrist” by Emilian Stanev. In conclusion, an algorithmic model and its operation have been presented, the knowledge of which gives way towards new evidence of the structural potential of the modern Bulgarian language.

- No. of Pages:14
- Keywords:yat vowel; yat-alternation; variable ya/e; imperfect tense; rule-based analysis; features
- Summary/Abstract:The paper proposes a rule-based feature analysis of the ya/e phenomenon in Bulgarian. Special attention is paid to the variable ya/е observed in the forms of the imperfect tense. First and second-conjugation verbs whose imperfect forms involve yat-alternation are compared with third-conjugation verbs where this alternation is not observed. The analysis also addresses the role of morphology in the process of adding different imperfect endings to the verb base and the effect of these endings on the variable ya/e. Finally, the phonemic status of soft consonants is discussed in relation to the proposed analysis.

- No. of Pages:8
- Keywords:‘tarpimost’, ‘tolerantnost’; collocation; corpus data; modifiers
- Summary/Abstract:The paper aims to check the topicality of the dictionary definitions of the synonyms ‘tolerantnost’ and ‘tarpimost’ in contemporary media speech according to corpus data. For this reason, the study investigates the use of the words in Bulgarian Web 2012 with the help of Sketch Engine. The research includes their frequency in the corpus and their collocation with the adjectives as modifiers. The hypothesis is that the lexeme ‘tolerantnost’ is more typical for the official discourse and it is linked with group rights and liberties whereas the lexeme ‘tarpimost’ is connected to the interpersonal communication. The data reveals that the modifiers with the highest frequency of both lexemes collocate with each of them. At the same time, ‘tolerantnost’ and ‘tarpimost’ are often used together in one phrase and therefore, their meaning is not completely the same. The conclusion is that additional research of their collocations and of the contexts they are used is needed so as to reveal the difference in their meanings.

- Keywords:ambivalence; valuation; speech act; phraseological units; proverbs; sayings
- Summary/Abstract:The object of the paper are 45 double-natured phrases which rely on context and situation. They may depend on the desire to speak only the truth, but to conserve one’s feelings. Phraseological units that change their value about positive or negative evaluation. Often the context specifies the positive or the negative mark of the construction. There is opposition between the past and the present, accompanied by changing the assessments (+ → – and vice versa). For example, phrases with stylistic note ʽrebelliousnessʼ are positively marked (i duma da ne stava = I will not hear of it; vikam s palen glas; na visok glas = in a loud voice; pravo, kume, v ochi = straight out, without mincing the matter; flat and plain; dumata mu na dve ne stave = his word is law; ne tsepya basma = not mince one’s words). They oppose to ʽobedienceʼ (stiga da reche „kuku“; ne karsha prikazkata / dumata na dve; zhenata me vodi za ezika) and ʽmasking the truthʼ (edno mu e na sartseto, drugo mu e na ustata = he wears his heart upon his sleeve; s okolni dumi; shlevya se kato zhaba; imam prikazka za nyakogo; kazvam dve dumi; Ne go usukvaj kilifarski! Usukvam go po kilifarski = don’t beat about the bush, get to the point). Another opposition is built about the silence as ʽpreserving a secretʼ and ʽbreaking one’s promice / wordʼ (compare the semantic and the etymology of the expression izplyuvam kamacheto = spill the beans). We also look at the stylistics of double-natured phraseological units (in comparison with artistic devices, used in negatively and positively charged expressions) to explain their power of expression and aesthetic effect in speech.

- No. of Pages:8
- Keywords:Bulgarian; renarrative; fake news; evidentiality
- Summary/Abstract:everal issues related to the category of evidentiality in the Bulgarian language are raised in the article. On the one hand, the article deals with renarrative in journalistic headlines, regardless of whether journalists use it intentionally and whether the use of renarrative is a real renarrative or is the homonym past indefinite form - perfect for constatation, in indicative. As for the different uses of this grammatical homonymy, the question is whether a clear semantic distinction can be made between these two cases. On the other hand, when the renarrative is deliberately used by journalists, it serves as an alibi for the news author to distance himself from the unreliable, incorrect content of the information, but at the same time to share that information. As a consequence of this assumption for use of renarrative as an alibi, the renarrative can be seen as one of the linguistic markers of fake news.

- Keywords:terminology; term formation; variation; doublets; synonymy
- Summary/Abstract:The report attempts to explain the relationship between these concepts in terminology, to clarify their boundaries, as well as to answer the question of whether the phenomenon of variance in terminology is needed and how it will develop in the future. Today there is an unprecedented growth of specialized knowledge worldwide and the variability is directly related to the dynamic development of knowledge. This is because, in short, when a new concept emerges, variance clearly reveals the process of finding the most appropriate and adequate linguistic form of the term in accordance with the specifics of the scientific or professional field. Finding the most accurate linguistic expression of a scientific concept is a very important and very complex activity that requires both professional and linguistic training. And the fact that the same scientific concept can often be expressed through different formalgrammatical structures is a proof of the rich word-formation possibilities of the Bulgarian language.

I describe the formal status of this type of compound words, I group them into semantic fields and I analyze selected examples of language usage in the cognitive-communication approach. I would like to draw your attention to several significant features of the concerned composites. It concerns the feature of brevity, the creation of new structures on the basis of a simple model based on analogy as well as the fact that the feature of formal transparency of compounds is accompanied by a large degree of semantic density. I put an accent on semantic blur of derivatives used in the language of the mass media out of context.

- Keywords:predicative; sensitive; infinitive construction
- Summary/Abstract:The paper considers constructions «sensation predicative + infinitive» and «emotion predicative + infinitive». The infinitives of the movement, position and some others are typical for sensation predicative: Kholodno stoyat’ / ekhat’ ‘It’s cold to stand / to drive’; Temno idti / chitat’ ‘It’s dark to go / to read’. Such an infinitive occupies an intermediate position between a valency and an adjunct. In the infinitive construction, sensitives undergo a semantic shift: they are shifted to the zone of emotional evaluations (Mne dushno ezdit’ letom v metro ‘It’s stuffy for me to ride the subway in the summer’) or to the zone of modal predicates (Uzhe temno chitat’ ‘It’s dark to read’).

- Summary/Abstract:The present article explores constructions with depictives (in conventional terms, predicative attributes), which constitute one of the forms representing the secondary predication. Participles in the depictive function are the most appropriate morphological means of expression of the current state of the subject at the moment of performing a certain action. The article shows, on the basis of the parallel Bulgarian-Russian corpus, that while participles can function as depictives in the both languages, they differ in their depictive potential.

- Summary/Abstract:The subject of the article is the origin and the language of the fragments attributed to Athanasius of Alexandria in the 15th century Miscellany from Hilandar monastery HM. SMS. 474, dated to 1385 – 1395. The Athanasius’ fragments about the origin of the Holy Spirit include: а) an incipit and a text from an unidentified anti-Latin Sermon; the incipit and the beginning of the Sermon are quoted by Basil the Great in his Homily XXIV against the Arians, Savellians and Eunomians; b) a Quote from the Pseudo-Athanasian First Dialogue contra Macedonius, 5.11 – 13; c) a Quote from Athanasius’ Epistula ad Serapionem, I.2. The same three fragments are attested in the unpublished Codex 41 of the Monastery of the Holy Trinity in Pljevlja, copied around 1400. The identical content and the lanquage of HM. SMS. 474 and Codex 41 testify to a common origin. The Athanasius’ fragments are placed together with a quote from Basil the Great, Against Eunomius, and Barlaam of Calabrias on the principles of the discussion (начала), as well as many commentaries on these fragments, that are up to date in the 14th century. It can be assumed that some Greek collection used for the Slavonic translation of this part of HM. SMS. 474 presents stored documentation of the disputes in Constantinople during 1334 – 1337 between the papal legates and their orthodox opponents Gregory Palamas and Barlaam of Calabria.

These are the Russian compilation Law Books, and Ms. Slav. 466 from Hilandar monastery, both dating from the 15th century. Despite they attest two different translations, the author argues that they could represent the continuity with the more archaic state in the written dissemination of the Code, conditions for whose translation first arose in the 10th century Bulgarian kingdom.

- Page Range:299-307
- No. of Pages:9
- Keywords:Old Bulgarian; written tradition; Old Russian writing
- Summary/Abstract:The article is devoted to the problem of understanding the Old Bulgarian basis of the Slavic written tradition in Russian philology. The relevance of it is due to the importance of assessing the continuing debate on the origin of Slavic writing, in particular the writing of the East Slavs. The aim of the article is to show the patterns of the dynamics of the views reflected in the literature on the question of the roots of the East Slavic script. The author traces the evolution of ideas about the origin of the Old Russian literary language and writing – from the establishment and recognition of the Old Bulgarian basis in the works of Russian Slavists of the 19th century – up to the hypotheses about the “own roots” of Old Russian writing and literary language in the Soviet period and the subsequent criticism of these hypotheses.

In the present study 32 hapax legomena and rare words have been lemmatized and analyzed in alphabetical order – from letter N to letter Yа. They have been excerpted from several Stoyan Mihaylovski’s works. Тhese lexemes have been compared with more than 40 Old Bulgarian, Middle Bulgarian and Modern Bulgarian and Russian texts (originated in the XI–XX century) to highlight their originality. Criteria for this analysis are: morphemic structure, denotative and connotative semantics, word formative ways, stylistic scope of use, their synonym corelats and the diffusion of occasionalisms in the Modern Bulgarian language.

- Summary/Abstract:The dialect of the village of Rechane spoken in the Prizren region bears all the diagnostic traits of the Bulgarian language and its northwestern dialects in particular. The geographical location of the dialect in the westernmost part of the Bulgarian language area not only makes it important for the delineation of its western boundary but also provides major evidence of its continuity. This is so especially as the dialect has a number of features typical of the Eastern Bulgarian dialects found at all linguistic levels. The subject of research in this article are specifically these characteristics. The analysis is based entirely on new dialect material collected by the author during the conduction of preparatory courses for university entrance exams in Bulgarian language, literature, history and culture for the local Bulgarian minority during the period 2015–2019. The characteristic dialect features are compared with similar phenomena in the Bulgarian language area and with phenomena in other neigbouring Slavic languages. The author draws important conclusions concerning the ethnic identity of the local population and the unity of the Bulgarian language, the continuity of the Bulgarian language area and the location of its western boundaries.

Special attention is also given to names of abandoned or depopulated settlements, whose number is constantly growing, since they continue to be part of the Bulgarian oikonymy. The oikonymic classification proposed here is based on the one traditionally implemented in Bulgarian toponymic research. In the conclusion, the most common structural types of settlement names as well as the most frequent formants are presented.

- Page Range:395-399
- No. of Pages:5
- Keywords:Bulgarian dialect words; Balkan borrowings; problems with etymologizing
- Summary/Abstract:The paper offers etymological interpretation of several Bulgarian dialect words borrowed from neighboring Balkan languages (Turkish and/or Romanian). One of the borrowings is already included in the Bulgarian Etymological Dictionary (ферфельì m. ‘a clumsy person’), while the etymology of the others is explained for the first time (хамел ‘glutton’, хамѐль ‘a gluttonous, voracious person’, хамеллѝкь ‘gluttony’, амѐл ‘a gluttonous, voracious person, cattle, etc.’, ‘stubbornness, persistence’, амѐль ‘greed’ and their derivatives). The paper discusses a couple of issues concerning the etymologization of Balkan borrowings in the Bulgarian dialects such as establishing the contact language, finding the correct etymon in the source language, revealing the specific way of penetration of the borrowings. In order to overcome the difficulties, the research needs to consider the specific sociolinguistic situation, the peculiarities of the dialect phonetic systems, as well as possible phonetic and semantic changes in the source language.

- Summary/Abstract:The article attempts to etymologize the dialect noun хрàски ‘small unripe cabbages’. In order to explore possible paths of semantic development, the noun is associated with the verb хрàскам ‘hit hard with noise’. The paper illustrates how hypotheses about the etymology of a word of obscure or uncertain origin can be built by means of semantic parallels. It demonstrates how the recurring links between two meanings, often found in different, etymologically unrelated words, can be convincing proof of the origin of words with obscured etymologies.

- Keywords:naive axiology; chrononyms; unfavourable time; Wolf holidays; Mouse holidays; Rabbit day; Snake day; Bear day
- Summary/Abstract:Traditionally, calendar time is viewed as a cyclic notion, which predetermines the existence of transitional periods serving as mythological and factual boundaries. In the majority of cases, these periods have negative symbolism as they are characterised by disturbance in the balance between heaven and earth, between the forces of cosmos and chaos. For these reasons, the periods of transition are regarded as dangerous and impure. The study titled “The Naive Axiology in the Bulgarian Folk Calendar” deals with a group of terms in Bulgarian calendar terminology – chrononyms denoting those periods and days in the Bulgarian folk calendar, which represent the most unfavourable time of the year according to folk beliefs. The paper addresses chrononyms formed with the roots: wolf – Вълчи празници (Wolf holidays), mouse – Миши празници (Mouse holidays), rabbit – Зайковден (Rabbit day), snake – Зъмски ден (Snake day), bear – Мечкин ден (Bear day). The semantic analysis studies each chrononym in the context of the system of holidays, prohibitions and preventive actions.

- Summary/Abstract:This article examines the Bulgarian proverbial correspondences of current East Slavonic proverbs of the thematic group “Love. Friendship” from the project of the Electronic Dictionary of active East Slavonic Proverbs. The main method for identifying actual paremiological parallels in three languages to Russian proverbs is a paremiological sociolinguistic experiment. The conclusions relate to the specifics of the selection of Bulgarian correspondences to Russian proverbial linguoculturemes against the background of Belarusian and Ukrainian proverbial parallels.

- Keywords:mytholinguistics; mytholinguistic structure; internal form of the word; linguistic nomination; rainbow
- Summary/Abstract:The present mytholinguitsic exploration analyses two groups of dialectal names of the rainbow in the Bulgarian language in the context of the associated mytho-religious beliefs, ritualistic practices and rational perceptions and applies the mytholinguistic method with its two models. The mytholinguistic analysis of the internal form of the word instrumental in revealing the mytholinguistic structure offers an opportunity to reconstruct specific mythological beliefs and to determine the semantic motivation in the linguistic nomination of the names of the rainbow subject to inquiry. The reason behind the formation of each name as a result of secondary nomination is revealed to the effect of establishing whether its internal form is a projection of the mythological and religious outlook and ritualistic practices of the ethnos or it is a reflection of rational perceptions.

- Summary/Abstract:The category of approximate numeral quantification (approximative) is still insufficiently researched both on a typological scale and in individual languages, in particular Slavic. Here we investigate the uses of Bulgarian approximative numerals of the type desetina ‘ten or so’ or stotina-dvesta ‘about a hundred or two’ in a parallel corpus of Bulgarian and Ukrainian fiction. These numerals have no direct counterparts in Ukrainian, so the lexical units and syntactic constructions which correspond to them and their statistical parameters are of interest for linguistic theory as well as the practice of translation.

- Keywords:linguoculturological concept; conceptual metaphor; linguistic picture of world
- Summary/Abstract:The present article is focused on the analysis of the results exhibited in Questionnaire Survey entitled „Metaphorical Thinking in Language“. The basic aim is to make comparison of the term REASON/VERNUNFT, and how it is perceived and presented in both German and Bulgarian. Data of the Survey are graphically presented. The Survey has comparative character and, as we may say, is done in the spirit of Cognitive Linguistics. As mutual base of comparison serves “Conceptual metaphor“, described in the book „Metaphors we Live by“, written by George Leikoff and Mark Johnson. In the process of linguistic description concerning the discussed Concept, many similarities are established, which is explained by its universality. The Concept itself as well, has similar metaphorical perception typical for the two languages, which is deeply rooted in their linguistic consciousness. The similarities are established with the help of Conceptual Metaphors, that play the role of universal instrument of human thinking as far as abstract linguistic essences are concerned.

New Year’s address is characterized as a ritual genre and is considered in the linguopragmatic aspect. The features of the ritual political discourse reflected in the speech genre of the New Year’s address are studied. A typology of communication strategies relevant to the presidential discourse in the New Year’s address is proposed. The linguistic features of the implementation of strategies and tactics of the communicative interaction of the president with the people in the New Year’s address are indicated. The New Year’s speeches of the presidents of Bulgaria, Slovakia, Poland, Ukraine and Russia presented on New Year’s Eve 2022 are analyzed.

- Page Range:528-534
- No. of Pages:7
- Keywords:Slavic dialectology; semantic models; time designations
- Summary/Abstract:The article examines the peculiarities of the designation of time periods in some Bulgarian and East Slavic dialects, mainly from the point of view of the specifics of dialect segmentation of this semantic sphere and the principles of nomination. The lexical material allows us to identify individual semantic models and shifts observed in time designations: the transfer of spatial parameters for the nomination of temporal characteristics; orientation in the names of months to phenological and economic cycles; the nomination of morning as the appearance of daylight. Taking into account the linguogeographic aspect, namely, a fairly wide distribution in the linguistic territory of Slavia, as well as beyond its borders, it is possible to assume the status of these models as semantic archetypes.

- Summary/Abstract:Folk terminology is an expression of the national specificity of cultures and in this sense its study is promising within the framework of the emerging trends of European thinking of the early XXI century. In this article an attempt is made to study the taxonomic group of chrononyms from the side of their formal structure and genesis. Chrononyms unite in themselves the properties of onomastic and appellative lexis: as a rule, it is not a conditional „name“, but a denomination closely connected with the denotation and designe. The topic receives a complex linguistic-cultural interpretation from the point of view of modern scientific thought about the complex phenomenon of language - culture.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper presents BulFrame – a web-based system designed for creating, editing, evaluating and viewing conceptual frames. A unified theoretical model for the formal presentation of conceptual frames has been developed, which predetermines the architecture of the application for data processing. The conceptual frame defines a unique set of syntagmatic relations between verb synonymous sets representing the frame and synonymous sets of nouns expressing the frame elements. In this way, the structure of the conceptual frame combines and builds on the semantic knowledge presented in WordNet and FrameNet.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper presents our observations on two major groups of stative predicates – Permanent Properties and Relations and True Statives, as well as their corresponding classes. After an overview of the main theoretical works focusing on stative predicates, we turn to their representation in two lexical-semantic resources – WordNet and FrameNet. We analyse the specific features of the conceptual description using FrameNet frames and demonstrate the research principles through the analysis of predicates for intent, will and desire. The analysis employs data from WordNet synsets and their corresponding equivalents in Bulgarian and Russian, while the examples are extracted from a parallel Polish-Bulgarian-Russian corpus.

- Summary/Abstract:The article discusses the features of LABLASS – the first Bulgarian web-based system, and its humble contribution to the field of associative lexicography. The system, which is used for research on verbal associations, makes use of some of the most common technologies – MySQL Database, PHP, JavaScript, HTML, CSS. The article offers a schematic presentation of the LABLASS model, its main modules, and the users’ options for working with it. There is also a graphic representation of its interface. At this stage of its development, only a pilot version of the LABLASS system is available to users, and it is periodically updated. However, its technical capabilities are not limited to the inclusion of ready-made lexicographical sources, but also allow for the creation of new dictionaries, and visualization and comparison of data from different dictionaries. As an example, a brief preview of the collections of associative data entered in LABLASS is provided.

- Summary/Abstract:The perception of discourse type is a factor in discourse processing and production which brings together our perception of sender/receiver, topic, function and other factors. What is important from pedagogic point of view is that we should, as early as possible, alert students to different discourse types, so that they may classify the interaction they are involved in, and make as productive a use of that classification as we do ourselves. The article represents some observations concerning the usage of frequently used communicative models by foreign students learning Bulgarian and presents examples of computer-based exercises with emphasis on the specifics of the communicative situation.
