Summary/Abstract: This paper is intended for an educated general audience. It addresses lexical fields known for cross-linguistic lexical diversity. It also analyses the dimensions of global lexical variation. Cross-linguistic variation is mostly a reflection of the peculiarity of cultures served by the languages in question. The study of global lexical richness, which finds its expression in variation, is in fact a contribution to documenting global cultural diversity. In this paper, the dimensions and examples of lexical variation are presented in an accessible manner, while making references to the sources where these issues have been formally analyzed.
