Summary/Abstract: One of important objectives of music education is to broaden and deepen the students’ capability to understand and appreciate 20th - and 21st -century classical music, which is a significant reflecting mirror of the present-day world. A possibility to achieve such an aim lies in using the potential of such music compositions that react directly to a strongly resonant story of the 20th or 21st century. Illustrated primarily on the example of Jan Palach’s death and compositions inspired by Palach’s story, the thought is further developed in context with the current educational conception in the Czech Republic; all this with a double intention: Firstly, to reflect on the conception of educational objectives as specified in state curricular documents; and, secondly, to point out an important objective that seems to be missing from the conception, which lies in the fully experienced life here and now, not only in preparation for the future.
